DESCRIPTION:July includes how to measure trees\, archery and fishy stuff at Holly River State Park. Join naturalist Jane Birdsong at these activities\, July 6 – 8\, 2023. Don’t forget the restaurant is open and hiking trails welcome your footsteps. \nTHURSDAY\, July 6\, 2023 \n2 pm – HOW TO MEASURE TREESNaturalist Jane will demonstrate\, then give You the opportunity to practice measuring circumference and use triangulation geometry to measure the height of trees. It sounds complicated but once you work with Jane\, it makes it easy. Remember trees in your yard could be a state record in size and trees at Holly River could be also. Let’s learn how to measure trees. Meet on the park office porch. All ages welcome\, family units and friends can work together. No fee to participate. \n4 pm – ARCHERYLearn to hold a bow\, load arrows\, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office. SUMMARY:Wonderful Day! Build a Bluebird Nest Box: Blackwater Falls
DESCRIPTION:A fun class with a purpose is planned at Blackwater Falls State Park\, July 6\, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at the Blackwater Falls lodge. Build a Bluebird Nest Box is led by master naturalist\, Sam Muncy. \nMake your own bluebird nesting box from a precut kit to take home. Participants will use a screw driver and wood screws to assemble boxes together. Instructor Sam Muncy will assist with assembly as needed. A template and instructions for cutting and making more boxes is part of the program and how to attract bluebirds. There is no charge to make a bluebird nesting box. Plan on two hours for this workshop and learning experience. \nMuncy’s powerpoint presentation of bluebird sightings across West Virginia is a treat and can include your photos. If you have blue bird photograph(s) send them digitally to instructor sam@samandsharonenterprises.com Briefly describe your photograph(s) with the images sent and share your bluebird interest during the class. \nAbout ‘Sam’ Muncy\, Jr.Charles H. “Sam” Muncy\, Jr. graduated from West Virginia University with a Master of Science in Civil Engineering and is a practicing Professional Civil Engineer and also holds registration as a Professional Surveyor. Sam really enjoys exploring and discovering the hidden gems of West Virginia natural heritage as a Master Naturalist certified by the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources. Being a Master Naturalist gives Sam the opportunity to support our state’s wonderful park system and to share his appreciation for our natural surroundings with visitors to our parks. \nMuncy is the treasurer of the West Virginia Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation.
