DESCRIPTION:Voyage!  Two state parks welcome you in 2023 with accommodations and dining at North Bend State Park and a blend of activities at Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park.  \nVoyage!  Stay overnight at North Bend Lodge and enjoy dinner and breakfast. The package is for two individuals.  If you have time while at the park\, get outside and play mini golf which is also included.  The mini golf is near the lodge at North Bend.  There are also trails nearby to walk or hike or a comfortable lobby to sit and relax. \nVoyage!  Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park is about 40 minutes from North Bend State Park.  Voyage includes on-the-island experiences for two individuals:  a horse drawn wagon ride/tour of the island (The Hardly Able Carriage Company is your host)\, a Blennerhassett Mansion tour led by docents providing the history of the structure and the island\, and most important\, two tickets to board the Island Belle sternwheeler to travel to and from the island.  Additionally admission to the Blennerhassett Regional History Museum is part of the Voyage package. \nVoyage! This packaged experience is for two individuals sharing a room\, two dinners\, two breakfasts\, two sternwheeler ride tickets\, and two tickets for wagon ride\, mansion tour\, and museum admission. The Voyage package is $299.99.  The cost also includes all applicable taxes and meal gratuities.  Transportation from North Bend to Blennerhassett Island State Park is not included. When making reservations and wanting to add another night stay at North Bend\, the reservationist may extend a reduced room rate for additional nights.   \nVoyage! SUMMARY:Mountain State Birding Festival: Blackwater Falls
DESCRIPTION:This is the ultimate birding weekend for advanced and beginning bird watchers.  The weekend is designed to see and listen to birds in scenic mountain habitats with well-known naturalist/guide Bill Beatty [Bill Beatty Nature] and Janice Runyan of Wellsburg WV as well as indoor presentation with Beatty and Runyan and a live educational birds program on Sunday afternoon. Mountain State Birding Festival is June 2-4\, 2023 with Blackwater Falls State Park as the home base. \nField trips are limited and fee based at $40 per person and includes both field trips conducted during the weekend.  Advance registration for the field trips is necessary. Please call Paulita Cousin at 304-259-5216 for field trip reservations.  All other activities are free and open to the public and are held at or begin from Blackwater Falls Lodge.  \nBlackwater Falls State Park is one of West Virginia’s best birdwatching regions. Open to the public. \nBirding Essentials for Everyone\nBirding is one of those special activities that can be\nenjoyed by anyone at any skill level. We will explore appearance\, behavior\, location\, sound\, equipment and other topics.  These insights and techniques will help anyone expand their birding skills and enjoyment. \nSATURDAY\, June 3\, 2023\nSaturday Morning 6:00 a.m.\nFIELD TRIP – Birdwatching\nPreregistration is necessary \nStuart Memorial Drive\, including Bear Heaven and Bickle Knob – Driving time to Stuart Memorial Drive is about 45 minutes each way. A wonderful birding area\, the 10-mile drive traverses mixed hardwood and Red Spruce forests as well as high meadows at elevations ranging from 2\,500 – 4\,000 feet. Typically\, 15-18 species of warbler are seen/heard which includes the possibility of Golden-winged Warbler and Mourning Warbler. Species which we should also see/hear at the highest elevations include Brown Creeper\, Winter Wren\, Golden-crowned Kinglet\, Hermit Thrush\, Swainson’s Thrush and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Other species include Least Flycatcher\, Blue-headed Vireo\, Red-breasted Nuthatch and Purple Finch. We will lunch near the observation deck at Bickle Knob which offers a stunning 360 degree panorama of the West Virginia mountains. \nSaturday evening\n7:00 p.m. – Free to attend. Open to the public. \nFlycatchers of West Virginia\nThere are 10 species of flycatchers that can be found in West Virginia. Two are easy to identify. Two others are not quite as easily identifiable. The rest can be downright difficult unless you know the songs they sing. This evening program is a visual and auditory program that will help unravel the difficulties of flycatcher identification. \nSUNDAY\, June 4\, 2023\n6:30 a.m.\nFIELD TRIP Freeland Boardwalk\nPreregistration is necessary \nThe Freeland Boardwalk area is arguably the best birding spot in all of the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge. Besides finding Bobolinks and Savannah Sparrows near the parking area\, the boardwalk itself is a reliable place for Willow and Alder flycatchers\, Swamp Sparrows and always a few surprises. We will explore this wonderfully birdy part of the refuge.   \n1:00 PM\nFlying Higher LLC\nBirds of Prey – Free to attend. Open to the public.\nPresented by Flying Higher\, Jo Santiago is a wildlife biologist and creator of Flying Higher. She is dedicated to the conservation of birds of prey and their habitats. The experience of actually living with non-releasable permanently injured birds of prey 24/7 has provided Jo with unique insight into their world. Their individual personalities\, behaviors\, needs\, idiosyncrasies\, and body language are remarkably like our own. They have much to teach us. In learning about them\, we learn much about ourselves. DESCRIPTION:If you like rocks\, gravel\, sand\, boulders\, and really old things like meteors and fossils\, meet Ken Ashton\, a geologist with the West Virginia Geological & Economic Survey. He’ll be at Twin Falls June 3\, 2023 with an afternoon hike and an evening geology program indoors. \nThe first step for this special program is an afternoon hike on the Falls Trail. Meet naturalist Tammy Cooper and Geologist Ken Ashton at the Falls Trail parking area at 1:00PM. This is a great opportunity to see first-hand how water shapes and erodes rock over time\, see layers of soils and have a better understanding of all soil horizons start with bedrock. This hike is open to the public and without cost. \nThe second step is our evening program with Geologist Ashton. This presentation goes beyond Twin Falls and across West Virginia’s geologic story. From coal to shale to fossils\, how sand is formed\, is there more than sandstone in West Virginia and what about rivers\, oil\, gas\, salt – all part of the geology program. This evening program will be in the Dogwood Room at Twin Falls Lodge at 7:00PM. DESCRIPTION:Beech Fork State Park hosts a National Trail Days Hike on Saturday June 3\, 2023 at 9:00am. The hike will be on Lost Trail which is a 3.5 mile loop\, with a rating of difficult. \nPlease meet at Lost Trail trailhead parking lot\, behind campsites 103 and 104\, in the Moxley Branch Camping Area. The hike will be led by Park Naturalist\, Terry Watkins\, and will be about 2 hours in length. \nSturdy boots or closed-toed shoes and water are required and insect repellent is recommended. Children 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult. \nParticipants completing the hike with Naturalist Watkins received a Trails Day patch. SUMMARY:National Trails Day Hike: Cedar Creek
DESCRIPTION:Cedar Creek State Park will be hosting a National Trails Day Hike June 3\, 2023. Let’s get started at 10:00 a.m. and meet at park headquarters by the ponds. \nEnjoy this outing with naturalist Della Moreland on the Park View Trail and Fisherman’s Trail. This activity will be roughly a 2 mile hike that will take around 1.5 hours of outdoor time. The level of difficulty for this hike is moderate at both beginning and end of Park View Trail\, while Fisherman’s Trail is a flat trail around the ponds. It should be a fun morning. \nWe encourage wearing boots or closed toed shoes. Bringing water is always encouraged. \nThere is no fee to participate. Attendees completing the hike received a 2023 trails day patch. \nNational Trails Day® occurs on the first Saturday in June. It is a day of public events aimed at advocacy and trail service. DESCRIPTION:It’s National Trails Day. \nSet foot at Chief Logan State Park and take a hike on National Trails Day with park naturalist Lauren Cole. The Coal Mine Trail is a moderate hike of about four miles. The pace will be determined by participants. Short stops are part of the activity to learn about the impact of coal in Southern West Virginia\, see old coal mine structures (coal silo\, tipple and more)\, as well as flora and fauna encountered along the trail. Youth should be accompanied by an adult or responsible individual. \nMeet at the “Pickin’ in the Park/Activities Building” at 10:00 a.m. The meeting area near and below the campground area with ample parking. DESCRIPTION:It is a great day for a hike at Pipestem Resort on June 3\, 2023 – National Trails Day. \nMeet Bob and Bryce at the entrance of McKeever Lodge for a hike along a section of the River Trail The trail begins behind McKeever Lodge and we’ll get started at 10:00AM. It starts as a .24 mile of steep descent and we take our time getting where the trail levels out. In about one and a half miles from the lodge\, it crosses the Canyon Rim Trail where shortly thereafter there is a turning point under the aerial tramway and we return to McKeever lodge. Hikers completing this activity received a Trails Day patch. \nDress for the weather and wear proper footwear – open toed shoes or sandals are not recommended due to the hike length and terrain. Total walking is about 3-½ miles. DESCRIPTION:Cacapon Resort State Park celebrates National Trails Day on June 3\, 2023 with two guided hikes. Organized by Park Naturalist Valerie Chaney and park volunteers\, both hikes will start from the Nature Center at 10:00 a.m.    \nThe easy to moderate hike will be on the Laurel Trail\, a forested and lake view trail that is approximately 2½ miles of total walking. \nThe more strenuous hike will be on the Ziler and Central Trail Loop. Led by naturalist Allen Miller\, this hike provides multiple views with a vigorous climb and descent\, but worth every step.  We pace ourselves to enjoy the experience. Both hikes start at the nature center and depart at the same time. \nHikes are open to the public and without charge. Wearing comfortable closed toed walking or hiking shoes is recommended. This trail hike will have a rest stop at the site of an old Swiss homestead settled in the 1870s where you can also see one of Holly River’s oldest and largest trees – oh if they could talk and tell stories. \nThis National Trails Day hike meets at the porch of the Holly River State Park office at 10:45 a.m. Hikers should wear sturdy shoes\, bring water and lunch. ‘We’ll set foot at 11:00 a.m and return by 3:00 p.m. which allows for a couple of rest stops along the way. \nPlease call Holly River State Park office at 304-493-6353 to preregister or for more information. This hike is open to the public and fee free. DESCRIPTION:Cass Scenic Railroad State Park is offering  a National Trails Day Hike Saturday\, June 3\, 2023 in conjunction with a Full Moon Hike. The hike starts at 8:30PM and meets at the Cass Company Store. \nThis hike is on the Greenbrier River Trail and will depart from the Company Store to Mile Marker 79 and return.  About three miles of easy walking until the light of a full moon. The hike leader is Superintendent Marshall Markley.  Participants received a Trails Day patch upon return.  The hike is open to the public and without charge.  \nNational Trails Day® occurs on the first Saturday in June. It is a day of public events aimed at advocacy and trail service. The celebration is led by the American Hiking Society and 2023 marks the 31st year of the initiative.

DESCRIPTION:Hike by the light of a full moon at Cass on June 03\, 2023. \nThe “Strawberry Moon” hike at Cass Scenic Railroad begins from the visitor’s center at 8:30 p.m. This evening walk\, led by Park Superintendent Marshall Markley or designee\, is about three miles round trip with a slight grade\, but mostly flat hiking. The hike is free and open to the public. \nJune’s full moon is known as the Strawberry Moon. Typically\, the last full moon of Spring and the first of Summer.
