You’re invited to join in the fun and activities while visiting for the day or staying at the park. There is no cost to attend and activities begin or inside the nature center unless indicated. \nFRIDAY\, January 27\, 2023Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. \n10:30 a.m.Bust n’ Boom TalkJoin the seasonal naturalist\, Kenny\, for a little history talk about the local area. About 45 minutes. YPP \n1:00 p.m.Creature Feature-Long Tailed WeaselJoin the seasonal naturalist\, Kenny to listen about today’s featured creature that makes it special. The long tailed weasel! About 30 minutes. YPP \nSATURDAY\, January 28\, 2023Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. \n10:00 a.m.Winter HikeJoin the seasonal naturalist\, Kenny\, for an out and back walk to Pase Point Overlook. Trail is rugged with roots\, rocks and uneven terrain. About 2 hours.\, 2 miles Sturdy shoes recommended. We may opt to change trail hike to another trail if winter safety becomes a concern. YPP \n10:00 a.m.Who Dung It?Join park naturalist\, Paulita\,\, as we discuss the differences between predator and prey skulls\, the purpose of animal pelts\, tidbits to animal track and scat. The creation of slimewill be part of this program. About 1 hour.YPP \n1:00 p.m.Snakes of West VirginiaJoin the park naturalist to hear about snakes that live in the mountain state. A live snake will be highlighted during the presentation. About 1 hour. YPP \n2:30 p.m.Nature MythsCan a shadow indicate when winter is over? Can the woolly bear coloration predict the winter season? Join the seasonal naturalist\, Kenny\, to help bust a few myths about animals. About 45 minutes. YPP \nSUNDAY\, January 29\, 2023Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. \n10:00 a.m.Scavenger Hunt FunPick up the list of fun with a twist from the seasonal naturalist. A cell phone capable of taking photos is required. Novelty prize to winner. \n11:00 a.m.Basket CraftNaturalist Kenny invites you to learn about using plants to create basket while weaving a small basket. Craft fee: $15.00. Next\, let’s explore the sounds we hear while outdoors and draw what they are! \n1:30PM Turkey Talk & TracksLearn the differences between hens and gobblers and some other fun facts! Followed by making your own turkey tracks molds. \nSATURDAY\, January 28\, 2023 \n11AM-1PM Winter Seed SowingJoin us in learning how to start seeds in a cheap and time efficient manner by using left over milk jugs. Location lodge. \n10:30AM No Leaves\, No Problem: All You Need is a TwigLearn how to identify a tree in the winter time by its twig. Followed by a shortwalk. \n1:00PM Using a Dichotomous KeyCome explore how to use a dichotomous key. Learn the basic skills and practice them through real keys and cartoon character keys. Dichotomous keys helps you to narrow down species to come closer to the actual species. Also\, use some phone apps that can help in identification as well. \nTUESDAY\, January 31\, 2023 \n10:30AM Monarch ButterfliesWhere have they gone? Let’s discover all about their amazing migration and life cycles. \n1:30PM WV Bookmark CraftUse recycled materials from WV calendars to make a beautiful bookmark. \nVisit the Tom Ambrose Nature Center at Cacapon Resort State Park January 23-26\, 2023! The nature center is a great stop for all ages\, showcasing exhibits on the park history and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp Morgan 1934-41. Other West Virginia natural exhibits include an extensive taxidermy collection of wildlife- fish\, birds\, fox\, bobcat\, mountain lion\, deer\, elk\, and eastern grey wolf! DESCRIPTION:The annual Shirley Schweizer Winter Walks event is planned for January 28\, 2023 beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the forest headquarters/nature center.  Join park staff\, volunteers and Kanawha State Forest Foundation folks and enjoy an afternoon outdoors.  You’ll have the opportunity to learn about wildlife in winter\, trees\, ferns and flora in the winter season\, and other outdoor interests.   \nBundle up to meet the weather and please wear appropriate footwear for winter conditions. SUMMARY:Starry Saturday Night - Green Comet Special:  Chief Logan
DESCRIPTION:Starry Saturday Night on January 28\, 2023 is a Green Comet Special! This is your chance to get a good look at C/2002 E3 (Z.T.F.) before it is gone for another 50\,000 years! \nMeet Naturalist Lauren Cole at Chief Logan Lodge at 6:30PM at the outdoor fire pit area. Lauren will be there from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. It is a night of sky-watching! Look through a computerized telescope at various celestial bodies including the moon\, planets\, galaxies\, and more. Learn seasonal constellations and other cool facts about the night sky. \nThis particular starry night program is centered around the special green comet\, C/2022 E3 (Z.T.F.). Other potentially visible objects include Jupiter\, Mars\, Saturn\, Venus\, ISS (8:20PM to 8:31PM) and the moon. This program includes a Moon Pie snack! On a facebook note when asked where it is best seen: “It’s currently hanging around to the left of the tail of the constellation Draco.” \nParticipants of all ages are welcome. There is no fee to participate. Social distancing is encouraged. The program can require patience that may be difficult for younger children. Dress for the weather\, it could be chilly. Rain will cancel this program.
