DESCRIPTION:The Mary Ingles Trail Associates (MITA) presents the 2022 “Legacy of Mary Ingles” encampment and living history event. This year marks the 267th anniversary of Mary Ingles’ odyssey in 1755 as she was captured by\, and escaped from\, Shawnee Native Americans. \nThe Mary Ingles Trail Associates (MITA) presents a historical encampment based on research of the life of Mary Draper Ingles. \n• Friday activities are offered for school groups.\n• Saturday and Sunday encampment activities and presentations are open to the public free of charge. \nAbout Mary Draper Ingles\nIn 1755\, during the French and Indian War\, Ingles was a 23-year-old frontier wife living with her extended family at Drapers Meadow\, near present-day Blacksburg\, Virginia\, when a Shawnee war party attacked the settlement. The pioneer woman’s mother was among those killed in the raid\, while Ingles\, her two sons and a sister-in-law were among the settlers captured. Ingles was separated from her boys and taken to a Shawnee settlement near the site of present-day Portsmouth\, Ohio\, and then on to Big Bone Lick in north-central Kentucky. There\, she and a captive from another settlement managed to escape\, and follow the Ohio\, Kanawha\, and New rivers back to Drapers Meadow in a perilous 40-day trek. \nReserve lodging online: \nBook Now

DESCRIPTION:The National Wild Foods Association’s annual Nature Wonder Weekend at North Bend State Park is brimming with richness in wild edibles – many are in your backyard. This weekend\, September 16-18\, 2022\, is devoted to nature and includes featured leaders\, teachers and authors: Vicky Shufer of Virginia Beach\, a therapeutic herbalist and David Hawkins of Mother Earth Foods in Parkersburg\, W.Va. are keynote speakers. Participation in the weekend is fee based and advanced registration is required. \nA variety of hikes and multiple workshops include wild edible identification\, preparation and preservation. The traditional wild food contest and social hour find Friday evening wild food and wild cake activities are lively and the Saturday social hour and wild drink contest are\nfavorites. \nAlthough wild foods are featured throughout the weekend\, five traditional Appalachian style meals are part of the weekend package. Hope to see you there. \nSeptember 17\, 2022 \nNoon\n“Why Pollinators”\nThis is an educational program geared to ages K-6\, meet the Naturalist at the Nature Center to learn about pollinators\, what it is and how you can help out on such an important process. Take a short walk from the Nature Center to one of Twin Falls largest pollinator areas. Craft will follow program on the porch of Nature Center. Allow 30 minutes. {Just because this program is geared for youngsters\, any age is welcome. Regardless of our age\, we can always learn something about butterflies and other pollinators. Interested in developing a pollinator zone or plot at home\, ask Tammy.} \nCraft Details\n“Recycled Paper Seed Bombs”\nMade from paper recycled here at the nature center. These paper seed bombs have Black-Eyed Susan seeds inside them. Just plant in the ground and wait to see them grow\, if planted now in September they will emerge in the spring\, so remember where you planted them. Black-eyed Susans flower is a popular pollinator flower that attracts butterflies throughout the summer and Goldfinch birds in the late summer and early fall when they start to seed. SUMMARY:Elk Management Tour Morning: Chief Logan
DESCRIPTION:Elk Management Tours in West Virginia are designed to learn about and visit where the reintroduction of elk in the Mountain State has occurred.. The three-to-four-hour activity begins at 5:30 a.m. at Chief Logan Lodge\, Saturday\, September 17\, 2022. The tour ticket includes a light breakfast\, “All About Elk” conversation\, transportation to the elk translocation site\, and outdoor time to experience the terrain\, vegetation\, elk habitat and potential sightings and a souvenir. Tours are limited to 12 participants and reservations are required in advance. Masks may be necessary during transportation. \nHearing or seeing an elk bull or cow is not guaranteed. The elk are free roaming and not penned. Sunrise at the tour site is outstanding in addition to looking and listening for elk and observing other wildlife or wildlife signs in the area. Walking/hiking is involved. \nThese considerations are necessary: carry-on items must be small to accommodate passengers more comfortably and only if necessary. The tour is not recommended for youth under age 12. Pets are not permitted. Participants should refrain from use of scented products. Packing food on the tour is discouraged – wild animals have excellent sensory abilities and may react adversely. Sturdy\, closed-toe shoes or boots are required\, no flip-flops or sandals. Long pants should be worn. Up to two miles of walking may occur at the management area with some moderate inclines\, but all at a reasonable pace. Binoculars are available to borrow. \nThe cost is $34 per person. Ticket or package prices include taxes\, but not gratuity.
