SUMMARY:Mid-week Farewell July: Bluestone
DESCRIPTION:Bluestone State Park offers a variety of nature-oriented activities July 27-28\, 2022. From Giant Bubbles to weekly campfire program\, Naturalist Jonathan Lipscomb invites family and friends to participate in outdoor fun. Activities are open to the public and free to attend unless there is a craft fee. \nWednesday July 27\, 2022\n1:00-2:30pm\nChalk Art\nJoin me at the Meador bathhouse to create sidewalk chalk art \n3-5 pm\nGiant Bubbles and Water Rockets\nJoin me at the Meador bathouse to play with some amazing bubbles and launch water rockets. This is a favorite time at Bluestone making ginormous bubbles and walking into them. We’ll learn a little science while we’re at play. It’s a great family activity and exceptionally fun for kiddos. \n6pm\nPrimitive Fire Starting\nNaturalist Jonathan is a bit of a heritage arts person. Meet him at the fire shelter behind the activities building to learn the basics of flint and steel fire starting. *ypp \n7-9pm\nWeekly Campfire\nJoin me at the fire shelter below the activities building to swap stories\, relax\, and learn basic campfire cooking skills. Cooking skills includes creating food. Servings are $1 each \nThursday – July 28\, 2022\n9-11am\nFishing\nFind Naturalist Jonathan at the fishing pier below the office to learn about fishing and the aquatic wildlife in our park. Bring a pole or borrow one of ours. Children under 15 are free all others need a fishing license which can be purchased at wvfish.com *ypp \n1-3pm\nNature Hike\nMeet at the office to take a hike along the beautiful Big Pine Trail. This is a 2.5 mile (each way) hike along one of our ridges. Long pants\, closed-toed shoes\, and water are strongly recommended. *ypp \n4-5pm\nBird House Building\nThis is a great activity. This program starts at the activities building in the pines to build a birdhouse. Houses will be hung around the park for our feathered friends at Bluestone OR you can take the craft home for $10. *ypp \n*ypp are young people for parks programs. Because\, by golly\, it’s Holly! \nWEDNESDAY – July 27\, 2022\n9:30 pm\nMOTH NIGHT is at Campground 1 on Wednesday. Look for the illuminated white sheet\, as we hope to attract some of the largest and most interesting night flying insects. (YPP) \nTHURSDAY – July 28\, 2022\nSpecial Program!\n2 pm\nSTORYTELLER\nLinda Durett will present a historical adventure as “Station Master’ on the Underground Railroad\, helping enslaved people escape bondage\, while traveling the Staunton > Parkersburg Turnpike. Meet her in the Old Pavilion. \n4 pm\nARCHERY\nLearn to hold a bow\, load arrows\, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office. \n10 pm\nMOTH NIGHT is at Campground 2 on Thursday.\nLook for the illuminated white sheet\, as we hope to attract some of the largest and most interesting night flying insects. (YPP) \nFRIDAY\, JULY 29\, 2022\n10 am\nSNAKES\nWhich 2 are venomous? Learn to identify the copperhead and rattlesnake with authentic replicas\, and why we consider all snakes very helpful. (YPP) Meet the Naturalist in Windy Gap Schoolyard to play a game where YOU are the bear. \n4 pm\nARCHERY\nLearn to hold a bow\, load arrows\, target shoot & long shots. (YPP) \nSATURDAY\, JULY 30\, 2022\n10 am\nHIKE HIGH ROCK TRAIL\nMeet the naturalist on the office porch at 9:45 am or at the bridge between the tennis court and Cabin 9 at 10 am. Bring water\, wear sturdy shoes. Hiking sticks or trek poles are helpful. This is a beautiful hike. 1 ½ – 2 hours. \n2 pm\nSPECIAL PROGRAM\nTHREE RIVERS AVIAN CENTER\nTRAC presents the “Wings of Wonder – Birds of Prey” program in the Anderson Center at 2:00\, July 30\, 2022. We ‘ll see at least six live educational birds as Ron and Wendy talk about each raptor\, their habitats and habits. Don’t miss this presentation. Questions are welcomed. Open to the public. Make a rubbing of your favorites to take home. (YPP) \nAll Naturalist Programs at Holly River State Park are FREE to everyone! YPP (Young People for Parks) encourages youth of ages 6 – 16 to go outdoors and explore nature in our state parks. DESCRIPTION:A new moon on July 28\, 2022 welcomes you to dining at Holly River State Park’s Farm-to-Table dinner. \nFeaturing locally sourced produce and products\, attendees in addition to an amazing dinner may take advantage of learning about planting crops by the moon phases from master naturalist Jane Birdsong and other activities planned during the weekend. A new moon is a waxing moon and annual flowers and fruits and vegetables that bear crops above the ground fare better planted between a new moon and a full moon. \nThe Farm-to-Table dinner at Holly River is the first of several unique dinners planned at many of West Virginia’s state parks. DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to these nature programs at Twin Falls Resort State Park July 28-29\, 2022. Activities begin at the nature center unless indicated. The nature center is open Thursday – Saturday from 3-7PM and Sunday from 3-6PM. \nThursday – July 28\, 2022\n3:30 pm\nFalls Trail Hike (YPP)\nMeet at the Trailhead\nTake a trip through the woods and add a little learning to it. Learn about the woods around you and a little history about the park while out there. \n6:00 pm\nTurtle Talk (YPP)\nHeld at the Lodge in the old Lobby\nWest Virginia has a wide variety of turtle species within the state. Join the Seasonal Naturalist in a short talk about these amazing creatures. Participants will receive a coloring sheet and take a pledge at the end of the talk. \nFriday – July 29\, 2022\n3:30 pm: Pollinators (YPP)\nMeet at the Nature Center\nPollinators are important for so many reasons. Taking a walk to the pollinator field we will learn a little about what they do. Also we learn about what types for pollinators you can find here. \n6:30\nButterfly Craft (YPP)\nHeld in the Old lobby at the Lodge\nLearn all about a wide variety of butterfly species that can be found here in the park. \nYPP is the Young People for Parks program for youth 6-16 years of age. DESCRIPTION:Activities and programs July 27 – 31\, 2022 at Pipestem vary from a Moth Night and a craft show to how to plan and prep for a hike. The nature center is open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There is no charge to participate in activities unless indicated Activities begin at the Nature Center unless indicated. Public and park guests are welcomed. \nThursday\, July 28\, 2022\n9:15 PM\nMoth Night\nMeet Julie at the Nature Center for some moth watching. She will have a black light and white sheet set up to attract moths. Bring a flashlight and don’t forget your phone or camera to capture the moth moments. You may also want to bring a chair if you have one. In the event of rain this program may have to be cancelled. (1 hour) YPP \nFriday\, July 29\, 2022\n10:00 AM\nPlan a Hike\nMeet Bob at the Nature Center for ideas about what to prepare for when you plan a hike. Maps will be available if you have questions about what trail may be best for you. Bob is an entertaining speaker. Be prepared to enjoy this program. YPP \n5:30 PM\nAn Extraordinary Ordinary Moth\nMeet Julie in the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to hear a storybook story about a moth. Then color a picture of a moth any color you want. A great activity for kids or adults who love moths. YPP \nSaturday\, July 30\, 2022\n9:00 AM – 3:00 PM\nCraft Show/Flea Market: Pipestem\nSummer fun includes outdoor shopping at a craft show/flea-style market at Pipestem Resort State Park on Saturday July 30\, 2022. Located at the Amphitheater parking lot\, the market is from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The event is open to the public to attend and check out the wares. There is no charge to attend. \nInterested vendors should contact Nicole Miller at nicole.m.miller@wv.gov to register. Vendors may set up starting at 7:30 a.m. Vendor set up fee is $25 for a 9×18 space. Space must be reserved in advance. \n10:00 AM\nDogwood Hike\nMeet Bob at the Nature Center for a little exercise while hiking along the Dogwood Trail. (1 hour) \n2:00 PM\nNature Hunt\nMeet Bob at the Nature Center. He will hand out a list of objects outside to look for in Nature. (1/2 – 1 hour) YPP \n5:30 PM\nHummingbirds: Magic in the Air\nMeet Julie at the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to talk about this amazing little bird and hopefully view some at the feeder. (1 hour) YPP \nNational Moth Week at Pipestem\nNational Moth Week celebrates the beauty\, life cycles\, and habitats of moths. “Moth-ers” of all ages and abilities are encouraged to learn about\, observe and document moths in their backyards\, parks\, and neighborhoods. National Moth Week is being held\, worldwide\, during the last full week of July. NMW offers everyone\, everywhere a unique opportunity to become a Citizen Scientist and contribute scientific data about moths. Through partnerships with major online biological data depositories\, NMW participants can help map moth distribution and provide needed information on other life history aspects around the globe. \nPipestem’s Moth Night are on Saturday\, July 30 and Sunday\, July 31\, 2022 \nBaby Deer (fawns) say: “Don’t “Rescue” me!\n“My mother may leave me alone for long periods of time\, sometimes hours or even all day.
