Windfest at Canaan Valley

Join us for family fun and celebrate the wind over the 4th of July weekend at Canaan Valley Resort State Park’s Windfest! Enjoy jumbo kite demonstrations, workshops and more. Scheduled activities include:

Friday

  • 9 a.m. Bald Knob Hike At approximately 4,308 feet above sea level, Bald Knob offers spectacular and unequaled viewing of Canaan Valley. Meet at the Bear Paw Gift Shop to purchase your scenic chairlift ride ticket ($7 for adults and $5 for kids and seniors). We will ride to the top of the mountain, hiking over to Bald Knob. Bring a camera, snacks and water. Moderately strenuous, not suggested for small children.
  • 1:30-4 p.m. Arts & Crafts Stop in at the Recreation Center and create a craft to make as a souvenir.
  • 5-7 p.m. Wagon Ride/Marshmallow Roast Take an evening wagon ride through the park, and enjoy an old fashioned campfire complete with marshmallow roast. *Register in the Beech Club, meet in front of Main Lodge. Fee charged: $7 for adults and $4 for kids 6-12). *Small children are free with parents.
  • 9 p.m. Star Gazing Introduction to telescopes and types of accessories. Bring your own binoculars or telescope to gaze at the stars in the night sky. Guest may use provided telescopes if they do not bring their own. Build a star chart, learn the basics of star gazing. *We suggest guest bring a light jacket, snacks and water.

Saturday

  • 9 a.m. Blackwater River Trail Hike this gentle trail and find out about the community of trees known as the Northern Hardwoods. Enjoy the excellent views of the upper Blackwater River. Meet at trailhead located near the golf clubhouse. Easy walking.
  • 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Kite Building Workshop New Era Kite Club will offer workshops for children and adults of all ages. Learn how to design and build your own kite, flying them afterwards. Small fee charged.
  • Noon and 3 p.m. Jumbo Kites & Stunt Kite Demos Learn how to fly stunt kites, including the 115’ cobra snake, gigantic octopus, and many more large kites and see the 150’ turbine.
  • 1-4 p.m. Kids/family field day activities (meet at the Recreation Center)
  • 5-7 p.m. WagonRide/Marshmallow Roast Take an evening wagon ride through the park, and enjoy an old fashioned campfire complete with marshmallow roast. *Register in the Beech Club, meet in front of Main Lodge. Fee charged: $7 for adults and $4 for kids 6-12. *Small children are free with parents.
  • 9 p.m. Fireworks Display Travel 12 miles to nearby Thomas, WV for a fireworks show at dark, presented by the Thomas Volunteer Fire Department (donations appreciated).

Sunday

  • 9-11:30 a.m. Stream Search Meet at the Nature Center and plan on a short drive to our designated area. Parents must accompany their children. Please wear shoes/boots that are appropriate for wading in a stream.
  • 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Kite Building Workshop New Era Kite Club will offer workshops for children and adults of all ages. Learn how to design and build your own kite, flying them afterwards. Small fee charged.
