Wildlife Programs & more at Blackwater Falls
November 23 - November 26
Three days of planned activities and presentations at Blackwater Falls focus on wildlife and outdoor discovery, November 23 and 24 and Friday, November 26, 2021. On Thanksgiving Day families and friends may go hiking, visiting Canaan Valley Resort for a meal, and enjoying time together in cabins. Planned activities are held at or start from the nature center unless otherwise indicated.

Black Bear Aware
Are you prepared to meet a Black Bear? Are they cuddly teddy bears? Can your actions harm a black bear? Join the park naturalist, Paulita for her lively presentation and answers to these questions and more. Understanding habits of WV state animal is important for when you may encounter the animal. About 1 hour. YPP
Replica Bear Claw Necklace Craft.
Create a replica bear claw necklace or purchase it to go for a later project. Crafting a bear claw helps to understand the overall size of this game animal. Craft fee: $2.00
Story Stones & Baked Apples
Park Naturalist Paulita Cousin will be at fire circle by Harold Walters Nature Center to have fun creating stories and baking an apple over the fire. Yum. Bundle up if its cold and join the fun. About 1.5 hours. YPP

Let’s Talk Turkey
The wild turkey is found throughout West Virginia with hunting seasons in spring and fall. This program is about the success story for conservation of wild turkey. Following the program, make a turkey craft to wear that includes repeating parts of a turkey as we recreate the bird topper. About 30 minutes. YPP
Use colorful paint to color in a pre-designed turkey or leaf to hang in your window. Making crafts reminds us of what you may see or hear at Blackwater Falls. Craft fee: $1.00
Fossil and Craft
Do you know how fossils formed and some fossils that may be in the area, There’s an activity includes so you “dig out” a fossil in a prepared area at the nature center . Craft fee: $3.00
Scenic Overlook Nature Stroll
Park naturalist, Paulita meets you at Pendleton Point Salt Sands Sign for this easy and interpretive stroll around the overlook. About 1 hour. YPP
Historical markers are throughout West Virginia and to learn about other markers find the book at the trading post.
3:00 p.m. Drum Craft to Go
Purchase a drum craft activity for the kids during the holidays – we’re crafting percussion. This is a craft that can be purchased and created at your cabin or home.

Hear some mythology about some of our constellations and then attempt to find them in the sky with the naturalist’s.
