Wilderness Skills Courses

Cacapon Resort State Park Nature Center is hosting hands-on wilderness skills programs for youth and adults offered in cooperation with Mountaineer Wilderness, LLC. Mark Chapin, military veteran, brings years of outdoor education experience to each hands-on learning program in the skills and methods essential for every back packer, day hiker, and hunter.

The outdoor training has two options: a Wilderness Skills Hike and an Edible Plants Hike.

The 2-hour Edible Plants Hike is open to youth ages 12 and older and adults. This course is 10 a.m. to noon. Chapin explores the park’s trails, fields, and woods, searching out and identifying dozens of plants and trees on this popular 2-hour Edible Plants Hike. Advance online registration is required for this hike. The fee is $36 per person. www.mountaineerwilderness.com.

From 12:30-2:30 p.m., there will be a 3-hour Course on Backpacking and Wilderness Survival Skills for youth ages 12 and older and adults starting to backpack or those experienced in the outdoors who want to refresh their skills before that next wilderness adventure. If you’ve never had training in wilderness survival, this is where you start. The Wilderness Skills Hike fee is $36.
