Nature Center Open: 9:00 a.m.—9:00 p.m.

THE CARDBOARD AND DUCT TAPE BOAT RACE IS TODAY!
10:00 a.m.—10:30 a.m. Registration Open for Cardboard and Duct Tape Boat Race
The West Virginia Celebration at Blackwater Falls continues with a West Virginia themed Cardboard and Duct Tape Boat Race at Pendleton Lake. Meet Park Naturalist Paulita Cousin and recreation team at Pendleton Lake to register your boat or to just watch the fun unfold as boats made out of cardboard and duct tape compete against each other in speed, team spirit and theme inspired design. There is a $1.00 registration fee per boat. West Virginia! Race to begin immediately following registration.

1:00 p.m. Meet our Turtles & Craft– Join Paulita Cousin, Park Naturalist in the Nature Center to meet our Nature Center turtles and hear about other turtles in West Virginia. Conclude the program with a creation of a turtle to take home. YPP FREE

2:00 p.m.—8:00 p.m. Tie Dye T-Shirt– Join recreation attendants: Brittany, Amie and Emily at Harold Walters Nature Center to use colorful dyes to create your own design on a white or black T-Shirt. Be prepared to work with dye. Craft fee: 8.00/youth, 10.00/Adult + tax. Heat transfers available for T-shirts at an additional cost of $3.00 + tax.

2:30 p.m. Spruce Bog Walk– Join the park naturalist, Paulita Cousin, at the trailhead of Gentle Trail for an interpretive walk along a portion of Yellow Birch Trail. About 70 minutes, 1 mile. YPP

3:30 p.m. Summer Solstice Walk– Meet Jenna Hughes, seasonal naturalist, at Sled Run for this walk along a section of two trails. About 90 minutes. 1 mile. YPP

4:00 p.m. Kids Imaginative Craft– Join the recreation attendants Amie and Emily in Harold Walters Nature Center to use glitter, sequins, buttons, crayons, pencils, glue, stencils, etc. to create a work of art for the fridge at home. FREE

5:00 p.m. West Virginia Campfire- Join seasonal naturalist, Jenna Hughes, at the fire ring by Harold Walters Nature Center to enjoy West Virginia themed trivia and make some pepperoni rolls in a Dutch oven. About 1 hour. YPP

6:00 p.m. Survival Cord Fun craft– Meet recreation attendants Amie and Emily in the Nature Center to make a paracord bracelet, critter, etc. Craft Fee: $2.83+tax

8:00 p.m. DUSTIN MCCRAY LIVE!
Dustin McCray, an Americana singer/songwriter from Ireland, West Virginia, performs in Blackwater Falls Lodge. Inspired by Mike Morningstar, Dustin has uniqueness in combining styles of music and has performed in a variety of groups and toured the nation as lead guitarist in Vegas-style show band, Rick K. and The All-Nighters. This event is open to the public at no cost. FREE CONCERT. Happy birthday, West Virginia!

Nature Center Open: 9:00 a.m.—9:00 p.m.

10:00 a.m. Black Bear Aware– Park Naturalist Paulita Cousin presents a lively and engaging program at the Nature Center about Black Bears and Bear Safety. You’ll know what to do if you encounter a black bear after this program. About 1 hour. YPP

11:00 a.m. Be a Bear Game– Meet at the Nature Center and walk a short distance to the game court where you play an active game in the life a Black Bear. Game host is Paulita Cousin, Park Naturalist. Small children may need assistance in reading and adults will enjoy the activity also. About 30 minutes. YPP

11:30 a.m. Bear Claw Craft in Harold Walters Nature Center. Craft fee: $1.50 + tax.

1:30 p.m. Irish Road Bowling– Meet near Pendleton Point Overlook – A 28-ounce iron and steel cannonball the size of a tennis ball, a bowl or bullet, is hurled down the loop around cabins 27-39, Trading Post, Nature Center, Campground and Pendleton Point Overlook. The player or team with the fewest shots to the finish line is the winner. No experience necessary. $5 security deposit fee for use of bowl.

Irish Road Bowling can be traced back to the 1600s. One story is that Dutch soldiers brought it when William of Orange came to Ireland in 1689. Another legend says that Irish patriots robbed English cannonballs and rolled them down a country lane by the light of a full moon. Faugh a Ballach!

2:00 p.m. Sand Castle Challenge is fun building of sand castles near Pendleton Lake. About 1 Hour.

3:00 p.m. Surprise Craft Session– Join the recreation attendants Amie and Emily to see what craft they have selected. Craft fee varies up to $2.00 + tax.

4:00 p.m. Wet n’ Wild– Join seasonal naturalist, Jenna Hughes, at the Nature Center to explore the wet and wild world along a stream and a lake. Be prepared to get wet! Sturdy shoes strongly encouraged. About 1 hour, 1/2 mile. YPP

6:00 p.m. Water Fun with Jenna Hughes, seasonal naturalist, in the Nature Center. From catch the water to water gun bowling to an epic water balloon skirmish. Sturdy shoes required. About 1 hour.

8:00 p.m. “WINGS OF WONDER – BIRDS OF PREY”
“Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all?” What bird says this phrase? Come to this Birds of Prey Education Program featuring LIVE BIRDS native to West Virginia to learn about owls, hawks and eagles. You’ll learn about the habitat, diet and behavior of each bird presented, the most common causes of injury to each species and the laws protecting these special birds. No fee to attend. Open to the public at Blackwater Falls Lodge, Conference Center. Free to attend. All ages welcomed. Happy birthday, West Virginia! FREE.

Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m.—4:30 p.m.

10:00 a.m. Monarch Butterfly – Come to the Nature Center to learn how to identify a monarch, conservation efforts, their need for milkweed and how you can help save the Monarch Butterfly. About 1 hour, YPP

11:00 a.m. Metamorphosis Craft– Join the recreation attendants Amie and Emily in Harold Walters Nature Center to make a craft about the Butterfly. Craft Fee: 1.42 + tax.

1:00 p.m. Project Get Outdoors is at the Nature Center for educational fun of sharing nature with children or children at heart. Build a tree by using tree imagery. Tree-mendous fun! About 30 minutes. YPP

2:00 p.m. Sunprint Craft is led by recreation attendants Amie and Emily in the Nature Center using sunlight to make a work of art for framing. Fun with sun! Craft fee: 0.94 + tax.

2:30 p.m. Meet a Tree Walk– Join the naturalist at Pendleton Point Overlook to learn about trees, how to identify them and more. Some walking, about 1 hour. YPP

3:00 p.m. A Murder of Crows Nature Film– Join the recreation attendants Amie and Emily in Harold Walters Nature Center for this film about one of nature’s most intelligent animals. About 1 hour.
