Things to do at Cacapon July 5 – 8, 2019

Friday, July 5

Nature Center Open: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

10:00 a.m. Fishing 101* We’ll head out to the lake and learn more about lake habitat. Fishing poles and bait will be available for the first five participants or bring your own! Adult participants require a fishing license. (1 hour) YPP

11:30 a.m. Pollinator Garden Tour Let’s discover our wildflowers and their pollinators! (1 hour)

1:00 p.m. WV Wildlife & Molds Join us in learning about WV wildlife, looking at pelts, skulls, tracks & scat. Followed a take home mold of an animal of your choosing! (1 hour) YPP

4:00 p.m. Meet and Greet Cacapon Please join the naturalist at the lodge. Valerie will be there for 90 minutes to answer questions and to help plan things to do during your visit.

7:00 p.m. Irish Road Bowling Fun for all ages! Enjoy this sport of rolling a cannon ball down a fun course. (45 minutes)

8:40 p.m. Movie on the Lawn Enjoy an outdoor movie and popcorn on the lodge lawn. Bring a blanket!

Saturday, July 6

Nature Center* Open: 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

9:30 a.m. Discovery Walk* So much to discover! Use the Young People’s Series Wildlife Guide & Checklist to find birds, mammals, reptiles & amphibians! (1 hour) YPP

11:00 a.m. Stream Study* Discover what makes a stream healthy and what unlikely critters may be hiding in plain sight! You may want to bring shoes to get wet. (1 hour) YPP

12:00 p.m. Water Balloon Challenge Cool off with this family fun relay challenge! (30 minutes)

1:00 p.m. Patriotic Tie-Dye Join us at the Nature Center for a fun afternoon of tie-dying! Make this a state park tradition & take home your own park tie-dye T-shirt! (1 hour) YPP *State Park T-shirts sold at Nature Center – $10.00 will cover T-shirt & dye.

5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Summer Concerts at Berkeley Springs State Park: “Danika & the Jeb, Folk, America” Free.

7:00 p.m. Introduction to Fire Building Learn several techniques for building a fire and try your own skill set at starting a fire with steel & flint. (1 hour) YPP

8:00 p.m. Cacapon Campfire at the campfire circle for a marshmallow roastin’ good time! You bring the marshmallows, and we will provide the sticks. WV songs & trivia. (1 hour)

Sunday, July 7

Nature Center* Open: 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

9:30 a.m. Ridge Trail Ramble Enjoy the scenic views from this trail on Warm Springs Ridge. (1 hour) moderate hike

11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. WV Furbearers* A drop-in program to experience a variety of wildlife pelts. (1 hour) YPP

1:30 p.m. Stream Study* Discover what makes a stream healthy and what unlikely critters may be hiding in plain sight! You may want to bring shoes to get wet. (1 hour) YPP

4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Art in the Park at Berkeley Springs State Park

Monday, July 8

10:00 a.m. Tai Chi class. Held at the Lodge. (1 hour)

10:30 a.m. Turtle Time* See some of Cacapon’s turtles. Learn about these amazing turtles to be followed by a craft. Color your own picture from “Petersons Field Guide Coloring Book” (1 hour)

1:00 p.m. Insects: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly!* Learn about the many different varieties of insects. Most are beneficial, however the invasive pests are harmful. Take a hike to discover some bugs with our bug finders and craft to follow. (1 hour) YPP

3:00 p.m. Pond & River Film Enjoy a short film at the nature center. (30 minutes)

4:00 p.m. Pond & River Film

4:00 p.m. Meet & Greet Cacapon Welcome to Cacapon! Please join the seasonal naturalist at the lodge. Valerie will be there for 90 minutes to answer questions and to help plan things to do during your visit.

Young People for Parks
YPP is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated on the weekly program by the YPP logo. Participants will also complete the information on a special YPP brochure. After turning it in to the park’s naturalist, each participant will receive a state park incentive for participating in three specified programs. All ages are welcome!
