Things to do at Holly River the week of July 3 – 7, 2019

Wednesday JULY 3

4:00 p.m. ARCHERY Learn the basics of target shooting, long shots, how to hold a bow, take aim and load arrows. (YPP) Archery range across from office. The staff at Holly River invites anyone of any age to participate in learning archery. It a great activity to get started in a new outdoor interest. You don’t have to be a hunter to enjoy archery target shooting.

9:00 p.m. Dark of Moon NIGHT HIKE – Meet Naturalist Jane at Carpenter Pavilion to hike in the dark on Laurel Fork trail & do some experiments to test your rods & cones. (YPP)

Thursday JULY 4 – Happy 4th of July!

11:00 a.m. BATS, WHERE HAVE THEY GONE? Learn about the white-nose fungus that is killing many of our hibernating bat populations. (YPP) Meet in Balli Shelter.

12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. WAGON RIDES See our park the slow, old-fashioned way – in the back of a wagon pulled by a tractor. Sign up on office porch: 12:00 p.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. rides available.

Friday, JULY 5

10:00 a.m. HIKE SALT LICK TRAIL Learn several trees and wildflowers on this one-hour trail hike with park naturalist Jane. (YPP) Meet on park office porch.

1:00 p.m. ANIMAL TRACKS – Meet in Windy Gap Schoolyard to make tracks of your favorite mammals & birds. (YPP) If raining, meet in Old Pavilion.

4:00 p.m. ARCHERY Learn the basics of target shooting, long shots, how to hold a bow, take aim and load arrows. (YPP) Archery range across from office.

Saturday JULY 6

11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. YOUTH ARCHERY TOURNAMENT Sign up for your age category on office porch. 7-8 yr. olds at 11:00 a.m.; 9-10 yr. olds at 12:00 p.m.; 11-12 yr. olds at 1:00 p.m.; 13-14 yr. olds at 2:00 p.m.

Sunday JULY 7

11:00 a.m. HIKE TRAMONTANE TRAIL with park naturalist Jane, have lunch at the site of an old Swiss homestead. Bring water & lunch, wear sturdy shoes. This is a high elevation trail, approx. 3 miles, and will take over 3 hours with lunch stop. Walking stick or trek poles helpful. (YPP)

3:00 p.m. VERY FISHY – Learn the parts of a fish, fold an origami fish to take home (YPP) and visit our trout in the trout rearing pond. (YPP) Meet in Old Pavilion.

Young People for Parks (YPP)
YPP is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated on the weekly program by YPP. Participants complete “What I discovered’ information for the naturalist to review. A YPPer will receive a state park incentive for participating in three specified programs. All ages are welcome to attend activities. Activities are free to attend.
