Weekend Activities at Blackwater Falls

With wintry weather comes new activities at Blackwater Falls to showcase wildlife, hiking and some indoor fun. The nature center hours are 10:00AM – 4:00PM Saturday, and 10:00AM to 3:00PM on Friday, Sunday and Monday. Park Naturalist Paulita Cousin, naturalist Madeline and nature center host Brittany welcome you to participate and enjoy these planned activities at the nature center, unless indicated otherwise.

Weather & Craft
Enjoy this whirlwind tour of Earth’s turbulent atmosphere and reveals the forces that make the day fair or foul. Create a weather window during the program. Craft fee: $2.00. About 40 minutes. YPP NR

Sand Art
Use colorful sand on a pre-pasted picture for free or create a necklace for $1.00.

Hibernation Hike
Meet park naturalist, Paulita, at the trailhead of Elakala trail (near Blackwater Lodge) for this walk along a rock and root strewn trail while learning about some of our wildlife and plants winter survival techniques. About 1 hour, 1 mile. YPP

Owls of West Virginia
Join park naturalist, Paulita, to hear about amazing adaptations of owls and everyone can attempt to hoot like an owl. Who-o-o will you hear calling from the forest at night? What a fun afternoon to learn about owls. About 45 minutes. YPP

Enjoy viewing a kid friendly film about a worried scarecrow as he watches animals prepare for the winter. Finger-painting offered during program for free or paint a plaster of Paris craft for a small fee of $1.00-$3.00

Family Movie Time
Enjoy this film about a young boy from Coalwood, WV. In 1957, a high schooler dares to break free of the mines and reach for the stars with the support of his teacher and friends to build his own rocket. PG

Finding Your Way (Map and Compass course)
Join the park naturalist, Paulita, for this program about how to use a map and compass. Afterwards, go on a compass treasure hunt. About 1 hour. Some walking. YPP

Compass Craft
Use markers and other materials to create a compass. Craft fee: $2.00

1:00 p.m.
SSSsnakes of West Virginia
Join the park naturalist, Paulita, to hear about some snakes that call West Virginia home and why they should be your friend. Program may include a live non-venomous snake or two. About 1 hour. YPP

2:00 p.m.
Wiggly Snake Craft
Use markers or paint on a snake that with a flip of the wrist moves like a snake. A fun craft and learn about snakes while crafting. Craft fee: $2.50
