Weekend Activities at Blackwater Falls

When visiting Blackwater Falls there is always discovery of nature and state park history. Join the park naturalist and staff at the nature center for these programs and activities November 12 – 14, 2021.

Friday, November 12, 2021
The nature center is open from 10:00AM – 3:00PM. Visit and see the displays and interesting facts about Blackwater Falls.

11:00 a.m.
The Sly Fox
Nature Center host Brittany invites you to enjoy a film about the crafty fox and then make a fox puppet to learn more about wildlife to take home. About 1 hour.

2:00 p.m.
Vultures & “Vomit”
Did you know their is a difference between a black vulture and a turkey vulture? Learn about some of their unique habits and after the program we’ll create a baggie of slime. A great afternoon at the nature center. 30 minutes.

Roving Naturalist goes to Canaan Valley
Meet Naturalist Madelene at the trailhead of Blackwater River Trail in Canaan Valley Resort State Park (golf course) for this walk along the beginnings of Blackwater River. About 1 mile. Plan on being outdoors for at least 90 minutes. YPP

Nature Journaling
Madelene likes to journal and invites you to Nature Journaling. Follow her prompts during this short program. Journaling paper provided.

Holiday Jar Craft
Crafty Brittany invites you to create a nativity themed or Thankful themed holiday silver or gold flecked mason jar. Craft fee: $5.00

Tranquility Nature Hike
Take this time to spend quiet time in the woods to find inner peace, restoration and a restart. Your host is Madeline and meets you at the nature center. About 1 mile, 1 hour. YPP

Coywolf Nature Film
Nature Host Brittany invites you to hear the story of how quickly adaptation can occur, especially when humans interfere. When you’re at the nature center be sure to look around at the displays and exhibits. About 1 hour. YPP

2:00 p.m.
Going Batty
Let’s learn about some bats found in West Virginia, their habits and conservation. Afterwards, create a bat craft to help you remember some facts about this small nocturnal animal. About 30 minutes. YPP
