Weekend Activities at Blackwater Falls

9:00 a.m. Beginners Bird Walk
Join the park naturalist, Paulita, for a walk along Pendleton Lake in search of feathered friends. About 1 mile, 1 hour. YPP

11:00 a.m. Dig It
Join the park naturalist, Paulita, for a beginner’s presentation about the geology of the park and “The Mountain State.” Participants will have an opportunity to be a paleontologist and take home a fossil find. About one hour. Craft fee: $3.00

12:30 p.m. BINGO
Join the for a fun game. Small novelty prize to winner(s). FREE

2:00 p.m. The Chestnut Story
Special guest naturalist Program.
Sam Muncy, Jr., Master Naturalist, will tell the history of the American Chestnut, explain how to identify and report sightings to The American Chestnut Foundation. There will be some young live American Chestnut saplings on display for hands on viewing and possibly take a short stroll to see if the naturalist overlooked some American Chestnuts growing on the park. About one hour. YPP

3:00 p.m. The Art of Nature Journaling
Join naturalist Inza to learn how to record your personal thoughts, emotions, ideas and observations through words and drawings. A fantastic way to look back and share your vacation or home environment in the future. Some supplies provided. About one hour. YPP

4:00 p.m. FBI Hike
Become a detective to search out evidence of “criminal activity” within our natural world. About an hour, little walking. YPP

5:00 p.m. Paracord Bracelet Craft
Join the attendant to create a survival bracelet for your arm. Craft fee: $3.00

6:00 p.m. Balsam Fir Walk
You’re invited to stroll among the American Beech, Red Maple and Balsam Fir trees exploring ways to identify trees. About 1.5 miles, one hour. YPP

7:00 p.m. Those “Dam” Builders Stroll
To walk along the shoreline of Pendleton Lake is a search of the largest rodent in North America. Will he make an appearance? About 45 minutes. Little walking, YPP
9:00 p.m. Whoooo Needs a Light? Hike
Inza and Kacey invites you to join them and explore the great outdoors without a flashlight. What fun activities will they use to explore the darkness? About one hour. Some walking. Flashlights encouraged for walk after program but, please, keep in pocket during program. YPP

Blackwater Falls Nature Center is open from 10:00 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. All activities meet at the nature center unless otherwise noted.
