Blackwater Falls offers these things to do August 30 – September 3, 2019. Join in the fun and participate. Activities marked with * are held at the Nature Center.
FRIDAY, August 30, 2019
Nature Center Open: 9:00 a.m.—9:00 p.m.
9:30 a.m. Rockin’ It on the trail of Geology with naturalist, Paulita Cousin, at Pendleton Point as we stumble deeper into the rocks, terrain and perhaps fossils that make Blackwater Falls State Park. About 1 hour.
11:00 a.m. Geology Craft* Craft fee: $1.18+ tax. YPP
12:00 p.m. Meet a Tree*– Join the park naturalist Paulita Cousin and explore identifying local trees then take a short walk to test your skills. About 1 hour, 1/4 mile walking. YPP
2:00 p.m. Black Bear Aware*– Park naturalist, Paulita Cousin’s presentation about Black Bears and Bear Safety is memorable. About 1 hour. YPP
3:00 p.m. Be a Bear Game*– Meet at the Nature Center to walk to the game court where you play an active game in the life of a Black Bear. Small children may need assistance in reading. About 30 minutes. YPP
3:30 p.m. Bear Claw Craft* Craft fee: $1.50 + tax.
7:00 p.m. Family Movie Night– Tumble down the rabbit hole. Rated PG About 90 minutes.
SATURDAY, August 31, 2019
Nature Center Open: 9:00 a.m.—9:00 p.m.
11:00 a.m. Tie Dye T-Shirt*– Use colorful dyes to create your own design on a white or black T-Shirt. Be prepared to work with dye. Bunches of fun! Craft fee: $8.00/youth, $10.00/Adult + tax.
1:30 p.m. Wooden Snake Craft–* “Paint” your own snake. Craft fee: $2.36 + tax.
2:30 p.m. West Virginia Snakes*- Join Naturalist Paulita Cousin to learn about snakes found in West Virginia, expel some myths and perhaps leave with a new appreciation of snakes. Live Eastern Rat snake and milkshake will be showcased during program. About 1 hour. YPP
4:00 p.m. Whose Poop? * Join the park naturalist Paulita Cousin for this program about scat. About 30 minutes. YPP
4:30 p.m. Slime Making*. FREE
7:00 p.m. Marshmallows and Flames*– Enjoy a fire, sing some songs, try some West Virginia Trivia and consume some toasted marshmallows. About one hour. YPP
8:45 p.m. Night Prowl*– Join the park naturalist Paulita Cousin to explore the world of darkness with fun activities. About 1 hour, 1 mile or less. Note: Please, leave the flashlight in your pocket for this program and sturdy shoes required (no flip flops or sandals). Whooo knows what we may hear, sense or smell. YPP

Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m.—4:30 p.m.
12:30 p.m. Intro to Outdoor Survival – Join park naturalist, Paulita Cousin, in exploring safe ways to hike and how to survive an unexpected night out. About 30 minutes. YPP
1:00 p.m. Survival Cord Bracelet*– Join recreation attendant Amie Dumire and make a survival bracelet out of paracord. Craft fee: $2.83 + tax.
MONDAY, September 2, 2019
Nature Center Open: 9:00 a.m.—3:30 p.m.
11:00 a.m. Raptors of West Virginia*– Join the park naturalist, Paulita Cousin to learn about some raptors found in the mountain state. No live birds, but guaranteed lively conversation about wings of wonder in West Virginia. About 45 minutes. YPP
12:00 p.m. Eagle Claw Craft*– Paint a replica Eagle Claw to make a keychain. Craft fee: $1.89 + tax.
1:30 p.m. This n’ That Craft* Visit and find out the selection of crafts for today. Craft materials fee vary.
3:00 p.m. Fireflies & Craft*– It’s an introduction to fireflies (lightning bugs) and to create a glowing craft. About 30 minutes. Craft fee: $1.42 + tax. YPP
TUESDAY, September 3, 2019
Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m.—1:00 p.m.
11:00 a.m. Coywolf Nature Film*– Learn about the wily eastern coyote. About 1 hour. YPP
YPP– Young People for Parks Program
Youth ages 6-16 years attend three of the Blackwater Falls State Park nature or park story activities listed as YPP. Complete a ‘what I discovered’ feature and meet with us at the Nature Center to receive your YPP patch. Note: All programs including those marked YPP are open to any age.
