Things to Do at Lost River

Welcome to Lost River State Park! Come on out, have a good time and learn something new! Programs are for the whole family; children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult.
TUESDAY, August 13
10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. MEET THE HORSES Come down to the stable and learn all about horses and their care. YPP
WEDNESDAY, August 14
10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. PINE CONE FOREST CREATURES Join Tara Caldwell at the new Nature Center for a fun craft project of making forest critters out of pine cones. YPP
1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. TREE HIKE Meet at the volleyball parking near Cabin 3 and hike down Howard’s Lick Trail and through the picnic area to see how many of the 35 native species of trees we can identify and talk about their importance for a balanced environment. YPP
3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Nature Center & SCAVENGER HUNT Come on down to the new Nature Center in the old gift shop and check out all our nature displays and creek aquariums displays. Take the challenge of a nature scavenger hunt. YPP
THURSDAY, August 15
1:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. NATURE CENTER Come visit the new Nature Center in the old gift shop where you will find all kinds of interesting displays and our creek aquariums of fish and other critters, plus our nature library loaded with guide books to identify everything from mushrooms to insects. YPP
FRIDAY, August 16
9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. BUG SAFARI It’s a hunt for bugs around the Rec Building and surrounding field. Butterfly nets and guide books provided for a fun program of catch, ID and release. Meet at the nature center. YPP
1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. NATURE AT THE NATURE CENTER Visit the new Nature Center in the old gift shop where you will find all kinds of interesting displays and our creek aquariums of fish and other critters, plus our nature library loaded with guide books to identify everything from mushrooms to insects. YPP
4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. NATURE BINGO Come down to the Lounge for a different and wild game of Bingo. Family fun and prizes.
8:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. WALK IN THE TWILIGHT ZONE Let’s take a night hike and look for bats, owls, and other night creatures! We’ll learn how these animals get around in the dark. Bring a flashlight and meet me at the pool bath House. YPP
SATURDAY, August 17
9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. BEGINNING BIRD WATCHING Meet at the Nature Center for a walk through the park to identify birds by sight and calls and a visit to our humming bird feeding station. YPP
10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. PLANT MANDALA Create a beautiful mandala by intricately arranging natural plants at the Assistant Superintendent’s house.
11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. CREEK CRITTER CRAWL Let’s go search Howard’s Lick for aquatic wildlife and learn about stream ecology! After collecting cool critters, we’ll identify them and what role they serve in the ecosystem and release them. Meet in front of the pool house and be ready to explore the creek and get your feet wet! YPP
6:00 p.m. GARDEN TOUR WITH TARA Join Tara at the assistant superintendent’s house for a tour of her medicinal plant garden and learn all about Mother Nature’s medicine chest. YPP
7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. CAMPFIRE TIME!
Meet at the Fire Pit across from the Rec Hall to enjoy a campfire & S’mores. Park supplies the fixings and roasting forks. If it rains, we will use the big stone fireplace in the Rec Hall.
SUNDAY, August 18

Calling all history enthusiasts! Learn about the remarkable past of Lost River State Park, “Lighthorse” Harry Lee, the Lee Sulphur Springs Resort and the Civilian Conservation Corps. Follow the sign by Cabins 1 & 2 across from the swimming pool.
