Things to Do at Lost River

Welcome to Lost River State Park! Come on out, have a good time and learn something new! Programs are for the whole family; children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult.

TUESDAY, August 6

10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. “MEET THE HORSES” Visit the stables and learn all about horses and their care. YPP

WEDNESDAY, August 7

1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. “TREE HIKE” Meet at the volleyball parking near Cabin 3. We’ll hike Howard’s Lick Trail and through the picnic area to see how many of the 35 native species of trees we can identify and talk about their importance for a balanced environment. YPP

3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. NATURE CENTER & SCAVENGER HUNT Meet at the new Nature Center at the old gift shop and check out all our nature displays and creek aquariums displays. Take the challenge of a nature scavenger hunt. Pick up the list at the Nature Center. YPP

THURSDAY, August 8

1:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. “NATURE AT THE NATURE CENTER” Visit the new Nature Center at the old gift shop where you will find all kinds of interesting displays and our creek aquariums of fish and other critters, plus our nature library loaded with guide books to identify everything from mushrooms to insects. YPP

FRIDAY, August 9

8:00 a.m. “HIKE TO CRANNY CROW” Join Tara at the stable for a hike to Cranny Crow in search of medicinal plants. This is somewhat of a strenuous hike, so bring water and a snack. Wear hiking shoes. YPP

10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. “BUG SAFARI” It’s a hunt for bugs around the Rec Building and surrounding field. Butterfly nets and guide books provided for a fun program of catch, ID and release. Meet at the new nature center in the old gift shop. YPP

1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. “NATURE AT THE NATURE CENTER” Come visit the new Nature Center at the old gift shop where you will find all kinds of interesting displays and our creek aquariums of fish and other critters, plus our nature library loaded with guide books to identify everything from mushrooms to insects. YPP

4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. “NATURE BINGO” At the lounge, enjoy a different and wild game of Bingo. Family fun and prizes.

8:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. “WALK IN THE TWILIGHT ZONE” Let’s take a night hike and look for bats, owls, and other night creatures! We’ll learn how these animals get around in the dark. Bring a flashlight and meet at the pool Bath House. YPP

SATURDAY, August 10

9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. NATURE CENTER OPEN

11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. “CREEK CRITTER CRAWL” Let’s go search Howard’s Lick for aquatic wildlife and learn about stream ecology! After collecting cool critters, we’ll identify them and what role they serve in the ecosystem and release them. Meet in front of the pool house and be ready to explore the creek and get your feet wet! YPP

2:00 p.m. “WINGS OF WONDER – BIRDS OF PREY”**YPP** SPECIAL PROGRAM!! Don’t miss this program at the Rec Hall for the Three Rivers Avian Center live birds of prey presentation. This wonderful program introduces these majestic birds to the public to encourage conservation efforts and conversation. YPP

7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. CAMPFIRE TIME! Meet at the Fire Pit across from the Rec Hall to enjoy a campfire & S’mores. Park supplies the fixings and roasting forks. If it rains, we will use the Lounge for s’mores and Nature Bingo with prizes.

SUNDAY, August 11

10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. A GARDEN TOUR WITH TARA Join Tara Caldwell at the Assistant Superintendent’s residence to tour her medicinal plant garden and learn all about Mother Nature’s medicine chest. YPP
