Things to Do

Fun things to do at Tygart Lake State Park, August 2 – 8, 2019. Join Park Naturalists Jacob, Emory or Amber at these scheduled activities at the Nature Center.

FRIDAY, August 2

10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Open Play. Come enjoy lawn games at the Nature Center!

11:00 a.m. Craft – Lovely Ladybirds. Learn all about the ladybird beetle (ladybug), why they’re important, and what they do…all while making a craft of your own. (20 minutes) *YPP

3:00 p.m. The Compass Game – learn to shoot a bearing on a compass, and then use your new skill to complete the Compass Course and win a prize! (25 minutes) *YPP

5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Meet A Naturalist – One of our Park Naturalists will be on hand at the Lodge desk to meet and greet!

7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. S’Mores Campfire. Say hello to the weekend with a classic campfire treat. At the fire ring between the Cabin and Campground area! Weather Permitting.

SATURDAY, August 3

10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Open Play. Come enjoy lawn games at the Nature Center!

11:00 a.m. Bocce, the Italian Game. Learn the basics of this classic lawn game. It’s been played since the days of the Roman Empire, and is fun for all ages.

1:00 p.m. Frisbee Golf at the field between the Cabin and Campground area. It’s Frisbee meets golf, and it’s a lot of fun!

2:00 p.m. Pine Needle Painting – can you paint a masterpiece using pine needles as a brush? Try it out! (20 minutes)

3:00 p.m. Up Close! Microscopes are amazing tools in the field of science. Learn how to use one to zoom in and see the hidden world in our everyday lives and objects! (25 minutes) *YPP

4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Music in the Park. Come enjoy the evening on the Park Lodge patio with 21 Band. Free and open to the public.

8:30 p.m. Tygart Theater – all are welcome to come out to the field area between the Cabins and Campground for a free, family-friendly movie. Approximately 90 minutes. Weather permitting!

SUNDAY, August 4

12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Open Play. Come enjoy lawn games at the Nature Center!

12:00 p.m. Skins and Skulls – learn about our native wildlife by the pelts and bones they leave behind. (25 minutes) *YPP

MONDAY, August 5

11:00 a.m. Craft – Animal Masks. What animal speaks to your heart and soul? Make a mask based on your favorite animal.

2:00 p.m. Nature Matinee – a fun and informative nature film about insect life. (35 minutes) *YPP

TUESDAY, August 6

11:00 a.m. Craft – Frog Friends. Learn about our native frogs and toads while making a fun froggy craft of your own. (20 minutes) *YPP

2:00 p.m. Photo Scavenger Hunt – use your camera or phone to capture photos of the listed items (and Leave No Trace) to win a prize. (20 minutes) *YPP

WEDNESDAY, August 7

12:00 p.m. Tree IQ – learn about the trees all around the Nature Center area, and how to identify them. (25 minutes) *YPP

1:00 p.m. Leaf Rubbing – this traditional folk art is a great way to keep a permanent record of the leaves you find. (25 minutes) *YPP

THURSDAY, August 8

11:00 a.m. Nature Matinee – a fun and informative nature film about mammals. (35 minutes) *YPP

2:00 p.m. You Can Knot! Can you? Yes, you can! Learn about some basic and very useful knots. Good knowledge for campers of all ages! (25 minutes) *YPP
