When visiting Blackwater Falls, take advantage of a variety of things to do. Full details are posted at the lodge and around the park. Here’s a snapshot of activities for June 27-30, 2019.

Nature Center Open: 9:00 a.m.—4:30 p.m.

3:30 p.m. Survival Cord Bracelet
Nature based activities with Naturalist Paulita Cousin
2:30 p.m. Introduction to Survival- Explore safe ways to hike and how to survive an unexpected night out. About 1 hour. YPP
4:00 p.m. Wet n’ Wild– Explore the water and surrounding along a stream and lake. Be prepared to get WET! Sturdy shoes strongly encouraged. About 1 hour, 1/4 mile. YPP
At the Lodge
8:00 p.m. DIG IT! -A visiting geologist with the West Virginia Geologic and Economic Survey presents an evening presentation about “The Mountain State” in Blackwater Falls Lodge. Program includes examples of rocks and an introduction to what lies beneath the surface in an informal yet interesting presentation. Program is about an hour long; open to the public at no cost.
Starting from the Gentle Trail
9:30 p.m. Night Prowl– Explore the world of darkness with some fun activities while traveling around the area. Sturdy shoes required. About 1 hour, 1/2 mile. YPP

Nature based activities with guest geologist and park naturalist
10:00 a.m. Rockin’ It on the trail of Geology! Join special guest geologist and park naturalist at Pendleton Point as we ramble deeper into the rocks, terrain and perhaps fossils that make Blackwater Falls State Park. Program begins at scenic Pendleton Point Overlook then rambles on a rock and root strewn path with a short but steep grade of less than ½ mile. About 70 minutes. Program is open to the public at no cost.
3:00 p.m. Spruce Bog Walk– Join park naturalist Paulita Cousin at the trailhead of Gentle Trail for an interpretive walk along a portion of Yellow Birch Trail. About 70 minutes, 1 mile. YPP

11:30 a.m. Geology Craft– YPP
1:30 p.m. Natural Dyes– A brief introduction to natural dyes before opening the Tie Dye Craft session. About 30 minutes. YPP
2:00 p.m. Tie Dye Fun- Use colorful dyes to create your own Blackwater Falls Souvenir T-shirt. Ever Tie Dye a Galaxy on a Black Shirt? Black or White Souvenir T-Shirts available. Sizes limited to first come basis. Be prepared to work with dye. Craft fee: $7.55 + tax youth sizes, $9.44 + tax for adult sizes. Heat transfers of Golden Trout and Black Bear available for an additional 2.83 + tax.
7:00 p.m. BINGO– A fun traditional game for the entire family. Small novelty prize to winner(s). About 1 hour. FREE

11:30 a.m. Amphibians Nature Film– leap into the world of frogs, toads and salamanders. About 30 minutes. YPP

7:00 p.m. Family Movie Night– Some snacks and old fashioned soda available for purchase.
Nature based activities with Park Naturalist Paulita Cousin
10:00 a.m. Amphibians of the Woods– Meet at the Sled Run fire circle to search for amphibians that call our woods home. If a reptile is spotted, they are observed, but not handled! Sturdy shoes recommended. About 1 hour. 1/4 mile. YPP
2:00 p.m. “Who Claims this Territory?” Join the park naturalist, Paulita Cousin, in the Nature Center to make a plaster of paris craft (about 1+ hour to dry), explore the world of local wildlife by examining tracks, scat and more. This program ventures outdoors to look for signs of wildlife in the field. About 90 minutes. 1/2 mile. YPP

11:00 a.m. Bird Seed Cake Craft– (pick up later in the day or next day due to drying time). FREE
1:00 p.m. Hummingbirds Nature Film– learn about our tiniest of birds, yet they qualify as some of the toughest and most energetic creatures on the planet. About 1 hour. YPP
2:00 p.m. Critter Fun with Parachute Cord
3:00 p.m. Coywolf Nature Film–Learn about the wily eastern coyote. About 1 hour. YPP
About YPP– Young People for Parks Program
To Earn the patch: You must be age 6-16 years. Attend three of the Blackwater Falls State Park activities listed as YPP. Complete “what I discovered’ information and meet with us at the Nature Center to receive your patch. Note: the programs marked as YPP are open to any age, but qualify to meet the YPP requirements.
