Thursday, July 4, 2019
At the Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m.—4:30 p.m.
10:30 a.m. This n’ That Craft
2:00 p.m. Tie Dye Fun – Use colorful dyes to create your own Blackwater Falls Souvenir T-shirt. Ever Tie Dye a Galaxy on a Black Shirt? Black or white t-shirts available. Sizes limited to first come basis. Be prepared to work with dye. Craft fee: $7.55 + tax youth sizes, $9.44 + tax for adult sizes. Heat transfers of Golden Trout and Black Bear available for an additional 2.83 + tax.
3:00 p.m. Whose Poop? It’s a program about scat. About 30 minutes. YPP
3:30 p.m. Slime Making. FREE
4:00 p.m. Fireflies & Craft– YPP

Meet at the Gentle Trail
9:00 p.m. Glow Night Prowl–Explore the world of darkness with some fun activities while traveling around the area. Sturdy shoes required. Children receive a glow stick to light up Independence Day. Supplies limited to first come. About 1 hour, 1/2 mile. YPP

At the Nature Center Open: 9:00 a.m.—9:00 p.m.
10:30 a.m. Story & Craft– Listen to the story of Smokey Bear then pretend the story is being turned into a movie and create a promotional poster that highlights the main points of the story. FREE
1:00 p.m. Backyard Bugs Film YPP
2:00 p.m. Bugs, Beetles and Butterflies–An introduction into the world of insects. Indoor program followed by outdoor search for insects with park naturalist Paulita Cousin. About 1 hour. YPP
3:00 p.m. Critter Fun with Parachute Cord
8:00 p.m. Patriotic Campfire– It’s a great evening of patriotic songs, classic campfire songs, storytelling and perhaps a tasty treat. About 1 hour. YPP

Saturday, July 6, 2019
Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m.—5:30 p.m.
9:00 a.m. Very Special Guest!
Forest and the Trees with guest naturalist Jackie Burns– Jackie has a B.S. degree in wildlife biology and 30 years of experience working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Discover relationships in nature between trees and things that depend on the trees. About 1 hour, 1 mile. YPP

11:30 a.m. Ferns and Fern Allies– Join the park naturalist Paulita Cousin to walk around the area to identify several varieties of ferns and fern like plants. About 1 hour, 1 mile. YPP

1:30 p.m. West Virginia Snakes– Join the naturalist to learn about the snakes found in West Virginia, dispel some myths and perhaps leave with a better appreciation of our slithering friends. Live Eastern Ratsnake and Eastern Milksnake highlighted during presentation. About 1 hour. YPP

3:00 p.m. Light Pollution Solution-YOU! Join the park naturalist, Paulita Cousin to learn why dark skies are precious and endangered. How it impacts the health of wildlife and humans. What can you do to help solve the problem and keep the stars visible for future generations? What is the park up to in regard to protecting this natural resource? About 45 minutes. YPP

4:30 p.m. BINGO. Small novelty prize to winner(s). About 1 hour.

11:30 a.m. Butterfly vs. Moth Nature Film YPP
1:30 p.m. Bubble Painting FREE
3:00 p.m. Project Get Outdoors! What activity will we do today? Sturdy Shoes required. About 30 minutes. YPP

YPP– Young People for Parks Program
Youth ages 6-16 years attend three of the Blackwater Falls State Park nature or park story activities listed as YPP. Complete a ‘what I discovered’ feature and meet with us at the Nature Center to receive your YPP patch. Note: All programs including those marked YPP are open to any age.
