Scout & Explorer Weekend
Blackwater Falls State Park is “scouting fun.” All scouts and adults are welcome to enjoy a variety of hands-on nature inspired activities in beautiful Blackwater Falls State Park.
Get an early start on Friday, July 12, by participating in Backyard Bugs program, learn about our state mammal and wildlife safety then explore the aquatics around Pendleton Lake and conclude the evening with a cardboard and duct tape drive in Movie. Create your own car out of cardboard and duct tape to enter to win a prize then enjoy watching a family friendly movie.

2:00 p.m. Backyard Bugs is an introduction to things that creep, crawl, climb and flutter. We begin the exploration indoors with introduction to identifying insects by creating a craft and fun activities, then venture outside for a hands on search for six legged friends. About 70 minutes, 1/2 mile. YPP NO FEE for this craft.
3:30 p.m. Be Bear Aware is all about WV’s state mammal, bear safety and how you can help save a bear’s life. About 1 hour. YPP
5:00 p.m. Aquatic Fun searches the local streams and the lake with some fun activities. You will probably get wet! About 1 hour. 1/2 mile. YPP
9:00 p.m. Drive In Cardboard and Duct Tape

2:00 p.m. West Virginia Snakes is a fun program about snakes of West Virginia. Live Eastern Rat snake highlighted. About 1 hour. YPP
4:00 p.m. Who Claims this Territory? finds weekend explorers making plaster of Paris wildlife tracks. Then it is outdoors into the world of wildlife by investigating their tracks, scat, habits and habitats in this program that begins indoors then ventures outside to test the skills you just learned in the field. About 90 minutes, 1/2 mile. YPP
7:00 p.m. Ferns and Fern Allies Walk is a walk along a section Balsam Fir Trail. Find out how to identify ferns, what spores are and more in this beginner’s introduction to ferns and fern allies found along the trail. About 1 mile, 1 hour. YPP
9:00 p.m. Night Prowl moves into the world of darkness with fun activities. About 1 hour and only about one mile or less along a section of park trails. Note: Please leave flashlight in your pocket for this program and sturdy shoes required (no flip flops/sandals). Whooo knows what we may hear, sense or smell. YPP

10:00 a.m. Monarch Butterflies and a craft is about the Mountain State’s butterfly, as well as other pollinators. Youth and family have the option to create a metamorphous craft for a small craft fee to cover materials.
11:30 a.m. Wildflowers! Helps anyone to learn how to use a Peterson Wildflower Field Guide using flower characteristics. Sometimes we find a flower or bloom and the best way to identify it is to use a book (or an app) to figure things out. About 1 hour. 1/2 mile. YPP
1:30 p.m. Treemendous Trees! is basic identification skills to identify trees using a dichotomous key. Then we test out new identification skills on nearby trees. Participants also have an opportunity to make a tree related craft for a small fee following the program. About 70 minutes. 1/2 mile or less. YPP
All activities meet at Blackwater Falls Nature Center and are open to the public. The Nature Center is at Pendleton Lake at Blackwater Falls State Park. Most activities are about one hour with hikes usually about 1 mile of walking.
