Scout & Explorer Weekend
Park naturalists invite, not only Girl Scouts, but all youth to “Scout & Explorer Weekend.” A variety of hands-on activities are planned and scheduled outdoors. Open to the public, activities are designed for youth ages 6-16, however, any age is welcome to participate.
Activities planned at North Bend State Park include:
July 12 (Friday)
“ANIMAL ARCHITECTURE” – Hike along the Overlook Trail in search of the various tunnels, pits, and other clever structures that wildlife build. Experience the specific niches and habitats of several different types of animals that help them thrive in the forest. Moderate terrain. We will meet at the Overlook trailhead, across from Cabin 8. This activity is about 1-1/2 hours of time and meets YPP requirements as well as Girl Scout, Animal Habitat interests.
July 13 (Saturday)
“ALL ABOUT TREES” explores common trees of North Bend State Park. Learn how to identify them and the important role they serve in the ecosystem. We will focus on trees along the Extra Mile Trail and a portion of the Access Trail, with both trails being flat and easy to walk on. This short loop is suitable for all skill levels. We will meet at the Nature Center. This activity lasts about one hour and meets YPP requirements as well as Girl Scout, Tree interests.
“INSECT INVESTIGATION” The insect population is one of the largest of all the animals on earth. Explore the small world of insects and their kin in a big way with the park naturalist. After learning about how to identify these small wonders, we will journey outside with nets in hand to capture a few and check them out in the magnifying glass. We will meet at the Nature Center. This activity lasts about one hour and meets YPP requirements as well as Girl Scout, Bugs interests.
“NIGHT HIKE” – Have you ever wondered about the nocturnal world and how some animals are able to survive in the dark? Find out as you use all your senses to experience the Extra Mile Trail at night and the many creatures that lurk just beyond the shadows. Owls, bats, bugs, birds and more greet youth and families scouting for natures. We will meet at the Nature Center. This activity lasts about 90 minutes and meets YPP requirements as well as Girl Scout, Night Owl interests.
