Saturday Activities

The place to be for outdoor fun and nature is North Bend State Park. Activities on this Saturday include:
10:00 a.m. – Geology Rocks! (Hike) – Join Ken Ashton, a geologist with the West Virginia Geologic and Economic Survey and find out what rocks make up the Mountain State. Ken will be giving a presentation on Friday evening, followed by a hike on Saturday morning. Geology Rocks in West Virginia! We will meet at the Overlook Trail trailhead, across from Cabin 1. (1 – 1.5 hours, 1.2 miles) YPP
12:30 p.m.– GPS and Geocaching – Learn the basics on how to use your GPS device for the newest way to treasure hunt, geocaching! A limited number of GPS devices will be available for you to use as we search for some of North Bend State Park’s hidden caches. Basic instruction and information is best for geocachers 12 and above. We will meet at the Nature Center. (1.5 hours)
2:00 – 4:00 p.m. – Nature Center Open – Come inside to enjoy arts and crafts and a chance to meet some of our wildlife friends. Take a look around and marvel at the mysteries of nature.
4:00 p.m.– North Bend Pioneers – Take yourself back to the rich and fertile Ohio Valley, where the first colonizers came over 300 years ago. We will embark on a journey to the wilderness, searching out a place for our settlement and build our community. Join us as we hew branches and logs to create our fort and surrounding structures in the forest. All are welcome, but respect for the land and respect for each other is a must. Proper safety attire will be provided. Younger pioneers need to have parental guidance. We will meet at the Nature Center. (2 hours) YPP
7:00 p.m. – Spirit Animal Masks – Some Native American cultures believe that everyone has a spirit animal that guides their life and shares similar characteristics with them. Find out your own spirit animal and become one with it as you make a wearable mask in this fun craft. We will meet at the Nature Center. (1 hour)
8:30 p.m. – Night Hike – Have you ever wondered about the nocturnal world and how some animals are able to survive in the dark? Find out as you use all your senses to experience the Extra Mile Trail at night and the many creatures that lurk just beyond the shadows. We will meet at the Nature Center. (1.5 hours) YPP
