Pipestem Nature Activities

Pipestem Resort State Park sits on the east rim of the Bluestone River Gorge, which carves through the plateau to the scenic Bluestone River 1,200 feet below. Visit us at the Nature Center which is open Thursday through Sunday 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

12:30 p.m. Salamander Craft
Meet Natalie at the Nature Center for a fun activity where you can learn about the Red Eft and make one to take home using only pipe cleaners and a magic marker. (Ages 10 and up recommended)

2:00 p.m. Water Purification
Meet Linwood at the Nature Center to learn how water is purified in nature and how we can turn nature water into drinking water that is safe for our consumption. A variety of options and methods while camping and hiking will be discussed. YPP

3:00 p.m. Turtle Time
Meet Lynn at the Nature Center to learn about all of the different species of turtles that live here in West Virginia; what they eat, how they behave, and what we can do to help and protect them and their habitat. Afterwards meet with Natalie to play a fun turtle game.

5:00 p.m. Some Tips and History on Archery
Meet with Linwood at the camp archery target range. Information for beginners with tips and history for those who have already learned the basics. YPP

6:00 p.m. Pipestem Charades
Meet Natalie behind the Campground store for a game of charades featuring things you might find in the park. A way to make social distancing fun!

9:30 a.m. Dogwood Hike
Meet Natalie at the Nature Center for a walk along the Dogwood Trail. This relatively easy trail strolls through the woods and passes by an old farm pond before returning to the Nature Center. (1 hour) YPP

11:00 p.m. Leave No Trace Principles, No One Will Know That You Were Ever There
Meet Linwood at the Nature Center and learn about minimizing your human impact on the environment while also visiting and moving through the natural environment. Camp so that no one will know that you’ve been there. Travel without leaving a trail. YPP

1:00 p.m. 3 – 2 – 1 – Ignition! From Spark to Campfire
Meet Linwood at the Nature Center and learn about the variety of ways to create that first spark to get the fire lit and keep it going. YPP

2:00 p.m. Story Time
Come see Natalie at the Harris Cabin for story time. All ages welcome.

3:00 p.m. Origami Moth
Meet Lynn outside the Nature Center where you will make a moth using the ancient Japanese art of paper folding called origami. Ages 10 years through adult are welcome.

4:00 p.m. Mothman!
Meet Lynn outside the Nature Center to hear firsthand accounts of encounters with Mothman, a cryptid of West Virginia.

6:00 p.m. Some Tips and History on Archery
Meet with Linwood at the camp archery target range. Information for beginners with tips and history for those who have already learned the basics. YPP

Sunday, August 23, 2020

8:30 a.m. Sunday Service
Join us in the Amphitheater for Sunday service. (1/2 – 1 hour)

11:00 a.m. Nature Hunt
Meet Natalie at the Nature Center. She will post a list of objects outside to look for in Nature. (1/2 – 1 hour) YPP

2:00 p.m. Sidewalk Obstacle Course
This obstacle course is made using chalk. It will be an exciting activity to see who can complete this course the fastest and win a prize.

9:00 p.m. Moth Watch
Meet Julie at the Nature Center for some moth watching. She will have a black light and white sheet set up to attract moths. Bring a flashlight and don’t forget your phone or camera to capture the moth moments. You may also want to bring a chair or blanket if you have one. In the event of rain, this program may have to be canceled. YPP

Please maintain proper social distancing (6 feet) and wear a face covering while participating in all programs, activities, and while visiting park facilities.
