Pipestem Nature Activities

Pipestem Resort State Park sits on the east rim of the Bluestone River Gorge, which carves through the plateau to the scenic Bluestone River 1,200 feet below. Visit us at the Nature Center which is open Friday through Sunday 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

10:30 a.m. Tomahawks, Hatchets, and Camp Axes
Meet Linwood at the Nature Center and learn how to choose, use, and maintain this helpful camp tool. Includes Cultural Variations and History. YPP

2:30 p.m. Tall Tales Story Telling
Meet with with Linwood on the Nature Center Cabin Porch. True (maybe) stories from the past and present. Personal first-hand accounts of events from history and fiction, that could be true, or at least credible.

5:00 p.m. Some Tips and History on Archery
Meet with Linwood at the campground archery target range. Information for beginners with tips and history for those who have already learned the basics. YPP

9:00 a.m. Five Senses Hike
Meet Natalie at the Nature Center to head into the woods and explore the trail using your senses. YPP

10:00 a.m. The Mighty Chestnut Tree, Eyewitness Recollections
Meet Lynn at the Nature Center and listen to the written accounts of eye witnesses as they recall what it was like living when the American Chestnut was the primary source of timber and lumber in the Appalachians. See Chestnut seedlings that were bred to resist the blight.

1:00 p.m. Moth Craft
Meet Natalie at the picnic tables by the Nature Center to create a moth craft.

3:00 p.m. Avoiding Animal Conflicts
Meet Linwood at the Nature Center to learn how to avoid undesired animal encounters. We will learn how to avoid harmful creatures and avoid harming creatures and what you can do if they get unruly. YPP

4:00 p.m. Mothman
Meet Lynn at the Nature Center to hear stories about Mothman, a legendary cryptid of west Virginia.

10:00 a.m. Nature Hunt
Meet Natalie at the Nature Center. She will post a list of objects outside to look for in Nature. (1/2 – 1 hour) YPP

1:30 p.m. The Great Migration Challenge Game
Meet Natalie at the Nature Center to learn about the challenges birds face while migrating. Then we’ll play a fun game where you get to be the bird! (30-45 minutes) YPP

3:00 p.m. Sidewalk Obstacle Course
This obstacle course is made using chalk. It will be an exciting activity to see who can complete this course the fastest and win a prize.

7:30 p.m. Mammals of Pipestem
Meet Julie at the Nature Center to learn about seven different mammals you may encounter at Pipestem and see their pelts. (1/2 – 1 hour) YPP

Please maintain proper social distancing (6 feet) and wear a face covering while participating in all programs, activities, and while visiting park facilities.
