Things to do at Holly River State Park August 16-18, 2019! It’s Holly by golly!

FRIDAY, Aug. 16

11:00 a.m. – Hike Oak Ridge Trail to patrol cabin & return on Ridge Road Trail (approx. 4 hrs.) Bring lunch, water, hiking stick or poles. Wear sturdy shoes. Meet at office at 10:45 a.m. or park at ball field/trail head, past campground 4, by 11:00 a.m. (YPP)

4:00 p.m. – Archery Learn how to use a bow for target practice & long shots. (YPP) Meet at archery range across from office.

7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. SING-ALONG w/ Jane Park Naturalist will bring her guitar to your campfire for requests & songs of Appalachia.

SATURDAY, Aug. 17

11:00 a.m. – GREAT MIGRATION CHALLENGE Play an interactive game which teaches the perils birds encounter on their long migration routes. (YPP) Windy Gap Schoolyard.

2:00 p.m. – SPECIAL PROGRAM!
BIRDS OF PREY Join us in the Anderson Activities Center for Three Rivers Avian Center’s live raptor program. You’ll be introduced to owls, hawks, & more, and learn how TRAC rehabilitates injured birds of prey. (YPP)

4:00 p.m. – Archery Learn how to use a bow for target practice & long shots. (YPP) Meet at archery range across from office.

SUNDAY, Aug. 18

7:00 a.m. Early Bird Walk Dawn chorus ID of birds will be by ear, led by Master Naturalist Steve Kimbrell. Meet on office porch.

8:30 a.m. – Beginning Bird Walk Meet on office porch for a 45-minute stroll on Laurel Fork Trail with 2 naturalists to help identify the Sunday morning chirpers. (YPP)

1:00 p.m. – Water: Where it Comes From/Where it Goes Learn the importance of protecting our limited freshwater sources by playing interactive games in Windy Gap Schoolyard. (YPP)

3:00 p.m. – Archery Learn how to use a bow for target practice & long shots. (YPP) Meet at archery range across from office.

What is Young People for Parks?
YPP is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated on the weekly program by YPP. Participants complete “What I discovered’ information for the naturalist to review. A YPPer will receive a state park incentive for participating in three specified programs. All ages are welcome to attend activities. Activities are free to attend.
