Naturalist Maddy, Samantha and Andrew invite you to outdoor activities at North Bend State Park.

Saturday, August 22, 2020

12:00 p.m. – Gobble, Cluck, Purr, and Yelp
Answer the call of the Wild Turkey and make your own real working turkey call in this educational and crafty program. Did you know that during our Nation’s founding, this bird was in competition with the Bald Eagle to be the symbol of our country, or that every Thanksgiving a turkey is given a Presidential Pardon? Learn these and other fascinating facts about one of the most common, but seldom seen birds of our forests. We will meet in the Nature Center. (1 hour) YPP

2:00 p.m. – Creek Critters
Put on your water shoes and get ready to get wet as you dive into the small world of critters that inhabit our local creeks and streams. Collect and observe crayfish, insect larva, and other aquatic invertebrates in this interactive program. We will meet at the Nature Center. (1 hour) YPP

4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. – Nature Center Open
Come inside. Take a look around and marvel at the mysteries of nature.

7:00 p.m. – Duct Tape Wallets
Need someplace to keep your loot? Come join your crafty cohorts and make yourself a duct tape wallet. A fun and simple craft for kids of all ages and all skill levels. Take a break from the heat and get crafty! We will meet in the Nature Center. (1 hour)

9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. – Nature Center Open
Come inside. Take a look around and marvel at the mysteries of nature.

12:00 p.m. – All About the Trees of North Bend
Explore the common trees of North Bend and learn how to identify them and the important role they serve in the ecosystem. We will focus on trees along the Extra Mile Trail and a portion of the Access Trail, with both trails being flat and easy to walk on. This short loop is suitable for all skill levels. We will meet at the Nature Center. (1 hour) YPP

2:00 p.m. – Animal Origami
Learn the Japanese art of folding paper to make fun and creative animals. Several projects will be available ranging in difficulty from easy to challenging. Make an animal to give to a friend or create a whole zoo for your room! All ages and skill levels are welcome. We will meet at the Nature Center. (1 hour)

4:00 p.m. – Insect Investigation
The insect population is one of the largest of all the animals on earth. Explore the small world of insects and their kin in a big way with the park naturalist. After learning about how to identify these small wonders, we will journey outside with nets in hand to capture a few and check them out in the magnifying glass. We will meet at the Nature Center. (1 hour) YPP

Young People for Parks Program (YPP)
YPP is an Environmental Education Program for children 6 – 16. Children need to attend three YPP activities during their stay at North Bend. Children will receive a certificate and a prize.

All programs will start on time, and will not be canceled due to rain. Lightning will cancel all activities. Children under 6 must have an adult with them to participate. Please bring proper attire to participate. We’ll watch our distancing and encourage use of masks.
