North Bend Fun – August 9-11

Take advantage of these things to do at North Bend State Park, August 9-11, 2019. Activities with * meet at the Nature Center.

FRIDAY, August 9

2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. – Nature Center Open

4:00 p.m. Spirit Animal Masks* – Some Native American cultures believe that everyone has a spirit animal that guides their life and shares similar characteristics with them. Find out your own spirit animal and become one with it as you make a wearable mask in this fun craft. (1 hour)

6:00 p.m. Warts and All*– There’s more to toads and frogs than warts. Find out how much when you come participate in this educational program about the famous amphibians and their fascinating adaptations. We’ll check out the River Run Campground Pond for local residents and maybe catch a few to get an up-close look. (1 hour) YPP

9:00 p.m. Campfire – A great way to spend your evening and meet some new friends while singing songs and telling stories around the campfire. Bring any family friendly story or song you want to share with everyone and enjoy a s’more before we say goodnight. We will meet at the Campfire Circle by the Amphitheater in the Recreation Area. (1 hour)

SATURDAY, August 10

10:00 a.m. Leave No Trace – Every activity that we do outside has the potential to leave some kind of impact behind after we’re through. This can sometimes be a problem for the environment and wildlife. Join in learning how to avoid some of these hazards when you are participating in whatever you love to do outside. We will meet at the parking lot at Basecamp. (1 hour) YPP

12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. – Nature Center Open

3:00 p.m. Creek Critters* – Put on your water shoes and get ready to get wet as you dive into the small world of critters that inhabit our local creeks and streams. Collect and observe crayfish, insect larva, and other aquatic invertebrates in this interactive program. 1 hour) YPP

5:00 p.m. Giant Pine Trail – Meet the park naturalist for a hike through some of the biggest and oldest white pine trees on the park. Forests are always in transition and as you journey along the trail you’ll see smaller hardwoods in the understory and have opportunities to see wildlife who call this forest home, including small mammals, white tailed deer, and birds. This is a shorter, loop trail and is perfect for anyone wanting to stretch their legs and get moving outside. Meet in the Lobby of the North Bend Lodge. (0.6 miles, 1 hour) YPP

SUNDAY, August 11

10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Nature Center Open

1:00 p.m. Tie Dye* – Learn how to tie dye your very own North Bend t-shirt! Shirts will be available to purchase and dye during this activity for $8.00 per shirt. All youth and adult sizes will be available. This makes for a great souvenir of your time at North Bend and a fun way to show your support of West Virginia State Parks. A variety of patterns and dyes will be available, so you can create your one of a kind shirt! (2 hours)

4:00 p.m. All About Trees* – Explore the common trees of North Bend and learn how to identify them and the important role they serve in the ecosystem. We will focus on trees along the Extra Mile Trail and a portion of the Access Trail, with both trails being flat and easy to walk on. This short loop is suitable for all skill levels. (1 hour) YPP

*A cost of $8.00 per shirt is required for the tie dye activity. You may purchase shirts at the time of the tie dye activity in the Nature Center.

North Bend activities and things to do are shared with the public on the North Bend State Park Foundation Facebook page.

Young People for Parks Program (YPP) is an Environmental Education Program for children 6 – 16. Children need to attend three YPP activities during their stay at North Bend. Children will receive a certificate and a prize.

All programs will start on time and will not be canceled due to rain. Lightning will cancel all activities. Children under 6 must have an adult with them to participate. Please bring proper attire to participate.
