North Bend Fun – August 2-4

Take advantage of these things to do at North Bend State Park, August 2-4, 2019. Activities with * meet at the Nature Center.


2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. – Nature Center Open

4:00 p.m. Marvelous Mammals* – The group of mammals contains some of the largest animals on planet Earth. But what is it that makes them so different when compared to other groups of animals? Find out when you attend this exciting and educational nature program and learn about West Virginia mammals and those that you can find at North Bend. (1 hour) YPP

6:00 p.m. Orienteering* – For centuries, compasses were used to find the right path. Sailors, explorers, and adventurers all use them to point them back home. If you want to learn how to use one too, come to this interesting program. The next time you venture into the woods you can be sure to know how to get back to camp. (1 hour) YPP

8:30 p.m. Night Hike*– Have you ever wondered about the nocturnal world and how some animals are able to survive in the dark? Find out as you use all your senses to experience the Extra Mile Trail at night and the many creatures that lurk just beyond the shadows. (1.5 hours) YPP


10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Nature Center Open

12:00 p.m. Tunnel 13 Trail Hike* – Experience the great outdoors with a spice of history mixed in. The trail is flat and easy to walk on, following an old railroad line leading to the North Bend Rail Trail and Tunnel 13. Learn about railroad and local history along with plants and wildlife throughout the hike. (1.5 hours, 1.5 miles) YPP

2:00 p.m. North Bend Pioneers – Take yourself back to the rich and fertile Ohio Valley, where the first colonizers came over 300 years ago. We will embark on the wilderness, searching out a place for our settlement and build our community. Join us as we hew branches and logs to create our fort and surrounding structures in the forest. All are welcome, but respect for the land and respect for each other is a must. Proper safety attire will be provided. Younger pioneers need to have parental guidance. We will meet in the parking lot at Basecamp. (2 hours) YPP

5:00 p.m. Fishing Derby – Bring your pole and we’ll supply the bait as you try your luck catching the Bluegill, Channel Catfish, and Bass that call the River Run Pond home. Anglers up to 14 years old are welcome to participate in this catch and release derby. We will meet at the pond by River Run Campground. (1 hour)


10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Nature Center Open

1:00 p.m. Murbles Tournament* – A cross between bocce ball and lawn bowling, Murbles is a fun and exciting game for any age and skill level. Low impact and able to be played anywhere, this new game is a perfect fit for state parks! Come out and experience Murbles with your family and friends for a great time! (1 hour)

3:00 p.m. Overlook Trail Hike – Take a hike to the overlook of the lake while learning about plants and wildlife along the way. The trail winds through a variety of habitats with great views and large sandstone outcrops in sections. Moderate terrain. We will meet at the trailhead, across from Cabin 8. (1.5 hours, 1.2 miles) YPP

5:00 p.m. Savvy Salvaging*– Ever heard the saying “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure?” This program focuses on using items that are damaged or otherwise trashed in a new way, to make beautiful works of art! (1 hour)

North Bend activities and things to do are shared with the public on the North Bend State Park Foundation Facebook page.

Young People for Parks Program (YPP) is an Environmental Education Program for children 6 – 16. Children need to attend three YPP activities during their stay at North Bend. Children will receive a certificate and a prize.

All programs will start on time and will not be canceled due to rain. Lightning will cancel all activities. Children under 6 must have an adult with them to participate. Please bring proper attire to participate.
