North Bend Fun – August 16-18

Take advantage of these things to do at North Bend State Park, August 16-18, 2019. Activities with * meet at the Nature Center.

FRIDAY, August 16

9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. – Nature Center Open

12:00 p.m. Overlook Trail Hike – Take a hike to the overlook of the lake while learning about plants and wildlife along the way. The trail winds through a variety of habitats with great views and large sandstone outcrops in sections. Moderate terrain. We will meet at the trailhead, across from Cabin 8. (1.5 hours, 1.2 miles) YPP

2:00 p.m. Nature Scavenger Hunt*– Become a super sleuth as you hunt for items throughout the recreation area. Investigate unknown worlds of animals, plants, and insects to finish and discuss your finds! Clue sheets are available with item pictures or text. Great for all ages. (1 hour) YPP

4:00 p.m. Murbles Tournament* – A cross between bocce ball and lawn bowling, Murbles is a fun and exciting game for any age and skill level. Low impact and able to be played anywhere, this new game is a perfect fit for state parks! Come out and experience Murbles with your family and friends for a great time! (1 hour)

SATURDAY, August 17

2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. – Nature Center Open

4:00 p.m. Creek Critters* – Put on your water shoes and get ready to get wet as you dive into the small world of critters that inhabit our local creeks and streams. Collect and observe crayfish, insect larva, and other aquatic invertebrates in this interactive program. (1 hour) YPP

6:00 p.m. Tie Dye* – Learn how to tie dye your very own North Bend t-shirt! Shirts will be available to purchase and dye during this activity for $8.00 per shirt. All youth and adult sizes will be available. This makes for a great souvenir of your time at North Bend and a fun way to show your support of West Virginia State Parks. A variety of patterns and dyes will be available, so you can create your one of a kind shirt! (2 hours)

8:30 p.m. Night Hike* – Have you ever wondered about the nocturnal world and how some animals are able to survive in the dark? Find out as you use all your senses to experience the Extra Mile Trail at night and the many creatures that lurk just beyond the shadows. (1.5 hours) YPP

SUNDAY, August 18

9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. – Nature Center Open

11:00 a.m. Savvy Salvaging* – Ever heard the saying “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure?” This program focuses on using items that are damaged or otherwise trashed in a new way, to make beautiful works of art! (1 hour)

1:00 p.m. Fishing Derby – Bring your pole and we’ll supply the bait as you try your luck catching the Bluegill, Channel Catfish, and Bass that call the River Run Pond home. Anglers up to 14 years old are welcome to participate in this catch and release derby. We will meet at the pond by River Run Campground. (1 hour)

3:00 p.m. North Bend Pioneers – Take yourself back to the rich and fertile Ohio Valley, where the first colonizers came over 300 years ago. We will embark on the wilderness, searching out a place for our settlement and build our community. Join us as we hew branches and logs to create our fort and surrounding structures in the forest. All are welcome, but respect for the land and respect for each other is a must. Proper safety attire will be provided. Younger pioneers need to have parental guidance. We will meet in the parking lot at Basecamp. (2 hours) YPP

*A cost of $8.00 per shirt is required for the tie dye activity. You may purchase shirts at the time of the tie dye activity in the Nature Center.

North Bend activities and things to do are shared with the public on the North Bend State Park Foundation Facebook page.

Young People for Parks Program (YPP) is an Environmental Education Program for children 6 – 16. Children need to attend three YPP activities during their stay at North Bend. Children will receive a certificate and a prize.

All programs will start on time and will not be canceled due to rain. Lightning will cancel all activities. Children under 6 must have an adult with them to participate. Please bring proper attire to participate.
