Nature-based Activities

Pipestem Resort State Park sits on the east rim of the Bluestone River Gorge, which carves through the plateau to the scenic Bluestone River 1,200 feet below. You are invited to visit us at the Nature Center which is open Thursday – Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

10:30 a.m. – Day Hike Preparation
Don’t wait until you are halfway through your hike to realize you need something. Basic preparation to handle the mountains of West Virginia, and some tips for when you are lost and desperate. Meet with Linwood at the Nature Center. Great for families that hike together or folks getting started in hiking. YPP

2:30 p.m. 3 – 2 – 1 – Ignition!
From spark to campfire. Meet at the Nature Center and learn about the variety of ways to create that first spark to get the fire lit and keep it going. YPP

3:00 p.m. Sidewalk Obstacle Course
This obstacle course is made using chalk. It will be an exciting activity to see who can complete this course the fastest and win a prize.

4:00 p.m. The Great Migration Challenge Game
Come by the Nature Center to learn about the challenges birds face while migrating. Then we’ll play a fun game where you get to be the bird! (30-45 minutes)

5:30 p.m. Some Tips and History on Archery
Meet with Linwood at the camp archery target range. Information for beginners with tips and history for those who have already learned the basics.

9:15 p.m. Moth Watch
Meet Julie at the Nature Center for some moth watching. She will have a black light and white sheet set up to attract moths. Bring a flashlight and don’t forget your phone or camera to capture the moth moments. You may also want to bring a chair if you have one. In the event of rain, this program may have to be canceled. (45 minutes) YPP

YPP stands for Young People for Parks. Kids 6-16 years of age are eligible for a certificate after they attend three programs marked YPP. Contact the Nature Center for more information. 304-466-1800 ext. 344.

9:30 a.m. Lake View Hike
Meet Lynn at the Gatrell Overlook for a hike along the Lake View Trail.

10:00 a.m. Camp Stoves and Cooking Options
Meet Linwood at the Nature Center and learn about the variety of backpacking and camp cooking stoves and other cooking methods with a variety of fuels and circumstances. YPP

11:00 a.m. Nature Hunt
Natalie will post a list of objects outside to look for in nature. Meet at the Nature Center. (1/2 – 1 hour) YPP

1:30 p.m. Crosscut saw and Sawbuck Demonstration
If you cut your own firewood, or just want to see how it was done before chainsaws, come to the Nature Center and meet Linwood to get ideas for your own sawbuck and see how the two-person crosscut saw operates.

3:00 p.m. When you get your knickers in a knot – Use the correct knot!
Meet at the Nature Center and learn how to tie the right knot for the right job. Beginners to experts and repeat guests welcome. There are always new knots to learn! You can bring your own rope or use one of ours.

4:00 p.m. Monarch Butterfly Talk
Meet Lynn at the nature center and learn about the fascinating life cycle of the Monarch butterfly.

6:00 p.m. Five Senses Hike
Meet Natalie at the Nature Center to head into the woods and explore the trail using your senses. YPP

7:00 p.m. Feeder Watch and Hummingbird Count
Meet Julie at the Nature Center to identify and learn about the different species of birds at the feeder and to count hummingbirds. Data on the number of hummingbirds will be submitted to the Audubon Society. YPP

Bil Lepp at Pipestem Amphitheater
Get ready to laugh yourself silly with Bil Lepp, a master storyteller whose humorous tales will curl the lips of the grumpiest of people. Show starts at 8:00 p.m. at the Pipestem Resort State Park Outdoor Amphitheater. Free and open to the public with plenty of outdoor air for social distancing!

Meet Natalie at the Nature Center. She will post a list of objects outside to look for in Nature. (1/2 – 1 hour) YPP

8:00 p.m. Mammals of Pipestem
Meet Julie at the Nature Center to learn about six different mammals you may encounter at Pipestem. (1/2 – 1 hour) YPP
