Nature Activities at Pipestem
Enjoy these free activities at Pipestem Resort State Park. Activities marked with * occur at the Nature Center. Fee free unless indicated. Get outside and enjoy the arrival of autumn. Pipestem Nature Center is open from 12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. daily.
FRIDAY, September 20th
12:00 p.m. Build a Butterfly Feeder*- Learn about pollinators and build a butterfly feeder to take home. (45 minutes) YPP
6:30 p.m. Fire Building 101- Meet Jessie at the campground fire ring near the campground store and learn the basic of fire building and primitive fire skills. (1 hour) YPP
7:30 p.m. Marshmallows Around the Campfire Ring near the Campground store to roast marshmallows. (1 hour)
SATURDAY, September 21st
10:00 a.m. Bluestone River Walk – Ride the tram down to meet a National Park Ranger on the patio of Mountain Creek Lodge for an interpretive hike along the Bluestone River. Please allow 10-15 minutes for your tram ride down. Participants will receive a coupon for a special tram ticket price. (1 – 1 ½ hrs.) YPP
11:00 a.m. Turtle Talk* – Learn about our three turtles. (30 minutes) YPP
2:00 p.m. Sidewalk Obstacle Course* – Participate in a fun obstacle course drawn on the sidewalk. Youth and adults welcomed.
4:00 p.m. Survival 101 – Meet Jessie at the Park Headquarters shelter to discuss a basic introduction to survival. (1 hour)
5:00 p.m. Bunny Hat*- Make a cute bunny hat using paper plates, construction paper, and some glue.
7:00 p.m. Dutch Oven Cooking- Join Jessie at the campground fire pit where you will learn to use cast iron pots and cook a delicious treat. (1 hour)
SUNDAY, September 22nd
9:30 a.m. Bird Walk* – It’s a bird walk to find some of our feathered friends. There will be a limited number of binoculars to use so bring your own if you have them. All skill levels welcome. (1 hour) YPP
11:00 a.m. Bird Count* – Check out the feeders, count birds and see how many hummingbirds we have. (1 hour) YPP
1:00 p.m. State Bird Craft*- It’s outside at the picnic tables bedside the Nature Center to create a craft of our state bird, the cardinal.
3:00 p.m. Camp Cooking- Meet Jessie at the picnic tables by the Nature Center to discuss campfire cookware and how to cook. (45 minutes)
5:00 p.m. Hammock Camping: Things to Know* – It’s all about hammock camping or hammocks in general. (1 hour)
YPP stands for Young People for Parks. Kids 6-16 years of age are eligible for a patch and certificate after they attend and participate in three programs marked YPP. For more information, stop by the Nature Center.
