Nature Activities at Pipestem
Enjoy these free activities at Pipestem Resort State Park. Activities marked with * occur at the Nature Center.
FRIDAY, September 13th
9:30 a.m. Deer Stroll* – Discover the natural history of the white-tailed deer as you take a short walk. (1 hour)
12:00 p.m. Lake Dip – Meet in the lower parking lot at McKeever Lodge (look for the guy with a big net). We will walk to the lake to take a dip, with a net, to see what kind of critters we can find living in the lake. (1 ½ hours) YPP
8:30 p.m. Glo Walk- Meet Jessie in front of the 18-hole Golf Shop for a stroll along the cart path. Get your glo-stick necklace to wear. Bring along a flashlight to look for critters on the course. (1 ½ hrs.)
SATURDAY, September 14th
10:00 a.m. Bluestone River Walk – Ride the tram down to meet a National Park Ranger on the patio of Mountain Creek Lodge for an interpretive hike along the Bluestone River. Please allow 10-15 minutes for your tram ride down. Participants will receive a coupon for a special tram ticket price. (1 – 1 ½ hrs.) YPP
Oktoberfest Pipestem Style is planned for 4:00 – 10:00 p.m. and will feature a new craft beer release from the Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company. This outdoor event is held at Pipestem Amphitheater and Shelter A. Enjoy Traditional German foods prepared onsite by Pipestem Chefs. Authentic dishes include: Wiener Schnitzel, Rouladen, Bratwurst, Currywurst, Spätzle, German potato salad , Rotkohl sauerkraut , Fried Brussels, Apple strudel, and Rote grütze (red fruit pudding). Great live music with Whyte NoiSe Co ~ Corey Lee McQuade ~ The Boys. Sound provided by, It’s Showtime.

BIRDS OF PREY
7:00 p.m. Wings of Wonder, Three Rivers Avian Center is at Pipestem today. Live raptors and birds of prey are part of this impressive and educational program. Learn about habitats, diets, and behaviors of several birds of prey including owls, hawks, and eagles! This may be one of your only chances to see these fascinating birds up close and personal. Do not miss it! For information on Three Rivers Avian Center, explore their website at www.tracwv.org. Wings of Wonder, Three Rivers Avian Center is at McKeever Lodge in the Cardinal Room with the presentation beginning at 7:00 p.m. Free to attend and open to the public.
SUNDAY, September 15th
9:30 a.m. Bird Walk* – Take a walk to find some of our feathered friends. There will be a limited number of binoculars to use so bring your own if you have them. All skill levels welcome. (1 hour) YPP
11:00 a.m. Bird Count*- Learn what kind of birds we have at the feeder, count them, and see how many hummingbirds we have. (1 hour) YPP
1:00 p.m. State Bird Craft- Meet at the picnic tables beside the Nature Center to create a craft of our state bird, the cardinal.
4:00 p.m. Primitive Hunting Spears* – Meet Jessie to learn about primitive hunting spears.
6:00 p.m. Old-time Sling Shots* – Meet Jessie at the shelter by Park Headquarters where you will see him make a wood sling shot and learn its use. (1 hour)
YPP stands for Young People for Parks. Kids 6-16 years of age are eligible for a patch and certificate after they attend and participate in three programs marked YPP. For more information, stop by the Nature Center.
