Nature Activities at Pipestem

Enjoy these free activities at Pipestem Resort State Park. Activities marked with * occur at the Nature Center.

WEDNESDAY, September 11th

11:00 a.m. Turtle Talk* (30 minutes) YPP

12:00 p.m. Nature Hunt* Get a list of objects in to look for in Nature. A prize will be awarded for finding them all. (1/2 – 1 hour) YPP

1:00 p.m. Finger-paint Flowers*- Create artistic flowers using finger paint.

4:00 p.m. Leaf Rubbing* Have fun at leaf rubbing art activity.

THURSDAY, September 12th

10:00 a.m. The Mighty Chestnut Tree; Eyewitness Recollections*– Hear the written accounts of eyewitnesses as they recall what it was like when the American chestnut was the primary source of timber in the Appalachian Mountains. See chestnut seedlings that were bred to resist the blight. YPP

12:30 p.m. Sidewalk Obstacle Course*- Participate in a fun obstacle course drawn on the sidewalk.

2:00 p.m. Nature Journaling*- Meet Lynn at the Nature Center for an introduction to nature journaling; what it is and how to do it. A blank unlined journal or sketchpad and a pencil are required for this activity. If you don’t have these materials, a starter journal and artist’s pencil can be purchased at the Pipestem camp store for $8.00. Ages 12 through adult welcome.

5:00 p.m. Dragonfly Craft*- It’s a craft where we shape dragonflies out of pipe cleaners and add beads. (1/2 – 1 hr.)

9:00 p.m. Moth Night* We attract moths using a black light and a white sheet. In the event of rain, this activity will have to be canceled. (1 hour) YPP

YPP stands for Young People for Parks. Kids 6-16 years of age are eligible for a patch and certificate after they attend and participate in three programs marked YPP. For more information, stop by the Nature Center.
