Nature Activities at Blackwater Falls

Take advantage of nature-based programs and activities at Blackwater Falls State Park. We invite you to join us. All programs and hikes begin at the Nature Center, unless otherwise noted and the nature center is open from 10:00 a.m. until 8:30 p.m.

10:00 a.m. Stem-winder Trail Hike
Join the park naturalist, Paulita, at the trailhead of Davis Trail (old petting zoo/stable) for a walk along a section of three park trails with some short interpretive stops along the way. About 2 miles, 90 minutes. YPP

11:00 a.m. A Squirrels Nature Film
This hour-long film is about the squirrel family. Did you know there are over 300 species of squirrels? YPP

12:00 p.m. Wiggly Squirrel Craft
Time to glue together then paint a wiggly wooden squirrel. Craft fee: $2.00

SPECIAL PROGRAM!
2:00 p.m. HISTORY ALIVE! ABIGAIL ADAMS
Join the park naturalist, Paulita, and special guest, JoAnn Peterson, for this first-person portrayal of Abigail Adams. Abigail was witness to and active participant in our nation’s birth, well known for her advocacy of women’s rights, especially in education, and her opposition to slavery. A valued confidante and advisor to her husband, John Adams, the nation’s second president, Abigail cautioned him that the Founding Fathers should “remember the ladies” in the new laws they would write for our young country. Together, they were the first inhabitants of the White House. Everyone welcomed; free to attend! This program is a History Alive! Program of the WV Humanities Council and WV State Park system. About 1 hour. YPP

3:30 p.m. Trees are Terrific Walk
Join the summer naturalist Kacey to explore the common trees of Blackwater Falls, how to identify them using a key and the role they serve in the ecosystem. About 1-hour, little walking. YPP

7:00 p.m. The Woodland Box Turtle
Learn about the only land turtle in West Virginia followed by a fun and interactive game for the entire family to enjoy. About 1 hour. YPP

8:30 p.m. Sundown Memory Maker
Discover ways to record your memories in a fun creative way. No experience necessary. Some supplies provided. About 30 minutes. YPP
Young People for Parks

YPP is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated on the weekly program by the YPP logo. Participants will also complete the information on a special YPP brochure. After turning it in to the park’s naturalist, each participant will receive a state park incentive for participating in three specified programs. All ages are welcome!
