Nature Activities at Blackwater Falls

Nature-based activities at Blackwater Falls State are family friendly and getting-outside fun. Join us.
All programs and hikes begin at the Nature Center, unless otherwise noted and the nature center is open from 10:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Craft fees cover materials used only.
Tuesday July 6, 2021
10:00 a.m. BIRDS AND BLOOMS WALK
A bird stroll along park trails listening and looking for feathered friends while looking at any blooms found along the way. About 1 mile, one hour. YPP
11:00 a.m. SUNCATCHER CRAFT
When at the nature center, why not “paint” a window decoration. Craft fee: $1.00+
1:00 p.m. CHANGING FOREST WALK
Meet at the trailhead of Elakala near Blackwater Lodge for a walk along Elakala Trail to look at the effects of man and nature on the forest. Walk about 1 mile, 70 minutes. YPP
2:00 p.m. MASON JAR CRAFT
Join attendant, Brittany, to add Thankful Blessing decals or Nativity decals or paint a gold or silver flecked mason jars to add to holiday décor. Craft fee: $5.00 includes mason jar, decal sheet and battery-operated candle.
2:30 p.m. SNOOKBALL
What is it and how do you play? Find out with summer naturalist, Inza. Lot’s of fun. About 45 minutes. YPP
4:00 p.m. BINGO
A traditional fun game suitable for the entire family. No money involved. Fun prizes. About 1 hour.

11:00 a.m. THIS N’ THAT VARIETY CRAFT
Join the recreation staff to see what onesies and twosies craft projects they have pulled from the craft cabinet for today’s variety crafts. Craft fee varies.
1:30 p.m. DEER NATURE FILM
A great long nature film that reveals the hidden world of white tailed deer you find in West Virginia and beyond. YPP
3:00 p.m. SILENT HIKE
This is a silent yet thoughtful and fun adventure along a section of Dobbin House Trail. This is an out and back walk. Listen and learn. About 1 mile, 1 hour. YPP
7:00 p.m. LIGHT POLLUTION AND SOLUTION. YOU!!!
Join the park naturalist, Paulita Cousin, for a program about the effects of wasted light on humans and nature. About 1 hour. YPP
9:00 p.m. HOOTS AND HOWLS!!!!
Join the park naturalists to explore nature after dark while hearing about some of the animals that welcome the dark. About 1 hour and a 1/2 mile of walking. Flashlights encouraged for walk home but please leave in pocket during program. YPP
YOUNG PEOPLE FOR PARKS
YPP is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated on the weekly program by the YPP logo. Participants will also complete the information on a special YPP brochure. After turning it in to the park’s naturalist, each participant will receive a state park incentive for participating in three specified programs. All ages are welcome!
