Mid-week Activities at Blackwater Falls

Naturalist Paulita Cousin invites you to the nature-based and outdoor activities planned at Blackwater Falls State Park during the week. Activities typically begin at the nature center and are free to attend, unless indicated. With autumn approaching, enjoy getting outdoors. If you are a birder, Paulita can help you with areas to visit if you’re visiting the area seeking a life bird in the Blackwater Falls/Canaan Valley area.

MONDAY, August 23, 2021
The Nature Center Hours today from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

11:00 a.m. Fox Tales & Craft
When visiting the nature center, take time to enjoy this film to follow the pups of a red fox as they grow and learn to hunt, adapt and survive in Canada while creating a fox paper bag puppet craft. About 1 hour. YPP

1:00 p.m. A Murder of Crows Film
It is a great film about a group of crows (a murder) as research shows the crows to be among the most intelligent animals in the world. About 1 hour. YPP

2:00 p.m. Sand Art Necklace
Let’s make a sand art necklace of an owl. Craft fee is $2.00 for the necklace or paint a pre-pasted picture with sand for free. Fun things to do at the nature center. About 1 hour.

WEDNESDAY, August 25, 2021
Nature Center Hours today are from 1:00 p.m.to 3:00 p.m.

9:00 a.m. Strolling Into History
Join the park naturalist Paulita Cousin, at Pendleton Point Overlook to stroll to an overlook of Blackwater Canyon while hearing about some local history and geology. Scenic wonders tipped with some fall colors. About 1 hour. Little walking. YPP

11:00 a.m. Rambling Along a Trail
Let’s ramble along the Balsam Fir Trail under a northern hardwood forest. Experience the forest with fun activities while hearing about the flora and fauna along the trail. About 70 minutes. 1.5 miles. YPP

2:00 p.m. I Spy Way up High
Paulita is your host for a film about weather that takes you on a whirlwind tour of Earth’s atmosphere, then enjoy a presentation about clouds while creating a weather window. Craft fee: $2.00 About 1 hour. YPP

THURSDAY, August 26, 2021
The nature center is open from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Enjoy the displays, ask the naturalist questions about the park and pick up a trails map and go hiking.
