Wintry weather welcomes you to planned activities at Blackwater Falls State Park December 26 to 30, 2021. Activities begin or are conducted at the Nature Center unless indicated.

Sunday, December 26, 2021
Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

11:00 a.m.
Weather & Craft
Enjoy this whirl- wind tour of Earth’s turbulent atmosphere and reveals the forces that make the day fair or foul. Create a weather window during the program. Craft fee: $2.00. NR. About 40 minutes. YPP

1:30 p.m. Wintertime Park Campfire
Enjoy cooking a dessert or grilled cheese over the coals of a fire while hearing information about the Wild Turkey. About 1.5 hours. YPP

4:30 p.m.
Leave it to Beaver
Learn what makes beavers great engineers and how they influence biodiversity as we stroll along Pendleton Lake looking for clues.
About 1 hour, 1/4 mile. YPP

Suncatcher Craft
Brittany greets you at the nature center and help you to use colorful paint to color in a pre-designed holiday window decoration . Craft fee: $1.00

11:00 a.m.
Fossil and Craft
Discover a little about how fossils are formed, some fossils you could find in the area and then “dig out” your own fossil. Craft fee: $3.00

1:00 p.m.
Balsam Fir Trail
Join the naturalist, Madelene, for an interpretive stroll along Balsam Fir Trail. About 1 hour, 1.5 mile loop. YPP

Owls of West Virginia
Join the park naturalist, Paulita, to hear about amazing adaptations of owls and attempt to hoot like an owl. Who-o-o will you
hear calling from the forest at night? About 45 minutes. . YPP

Drum Craft
Purchase a drum craft kit to complete in the Nature Center or take it for a later project. Craft fee: $3.00

Winter Birds and Abandoned Nest
Join park naturalist Paulita, to learn some wintering bird characteristics and Identification. Also enjoy helpful tips of possible identification of abandoned bird nest found in the area. YPP

1:30 p.m.
Disappearing Stars
The park naturalist take you on a journey to discover why the stars are disappearing from our view, the effect it has on wildlife and humans and ways you can help save the stars. About 45 minutes. YPP

Hibernation Hike
Join the park naturalist at the trailhead of Elakala trail (near Blackwater Lodge) for this walk along a rock and root strewn trail while learning about some of our wildlife and plants winter survival techniques. About 1 hour, 1 mile. YPP

Nature Journaling
Join the seasonal naturalist, Madelene, to pick up journal paper and follow her prompts during this short program. Journal books available to purchase for $3.00. YPP
