Marathon Race at Cass

October 6, 2018 @ 9:01 pm

In its inaugural year, this point-to-point full marathon (26.2 miles) is on a flat/slightly downhill course on the scenic Greenbrier River Trail in Pocahontas County, WV. The trail follows the Greenbrier River south on the old railway bed with a 1% downhill average grade throughout. The surface is packed gravel with a number of flat, wooden bridge crossings and then pavement for approximately the last two miles of the course.

The marathon will start in Cass Scenic Railroad State Park and run south on the trail, finishing at Stillwell Park in Marlinton, WV. The course and trail provide many scenic views of the Greenbrier River and surrounding hills, with deciduous trees of all colors as a backdrop. There will be mile markers and volunteer aid stations providing hydration. At mile 15, the course will pass through the old Sharp’s Tunnel before crossing the highest wooden bridge on the course. There will be some lighting provided in the tunnel. The finish line will be at Stillwell Park, just South of Marlinton, WV. The race starts with a train whistle blast at 8:00 a.m.

Shuttle buses will be departing from the finish line at Stillwell Park (in Marlinton, WV) at 6:45 a.m. on race day to take racers to the starting line in Cass at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. An 8-hour cut-off time will be observed. A timing mat at 13.1, the half way point, will have a 4-hour cut-off.
