It’s Fall Ya All: Cacapon

Mid-week activities are nature-based. Hope you find some time to Join Naturalist Valerie Chaney, Allen Miller and volunteers for these activities October 9 – 12, 2023. [Don’t forget the golf course is open, the park restaurant, spa at the lodge and more welcomes you.]

MONDAY, October 9, 2023

10:00AM Tai Chi
This class will help increase balance, flexibility, and focus on connection to mind, body, & spirit. Location lodge.

10:00AM Turkey Talk
Learn the differences between hens and gobblers and some other fun facts!

1:00PM Weed Warriors
Come help battle the park’s non-native invasive plants! Learn about Japanese Barberry, Oriental
Bittersweet, and Japanese Stilt grass. Join this interpretive walk and help pull some plants along the way.

2:30PM Nature Bingo
Enjoy all the fun facts about nature while playing bingo!

10:00AM Where are the Monarchs?
They are en route to Mexico. Citizen science projects help monarch experts know where they are by reporting monarch sightings from all across the country on journeynorth.org

1:00PM Tree ID Walk
Learn some common trees by their leaves and changing colors.

10:00AM The CCC Boys: A West Virginia Legacy
The CCC boys left a legacy that can still be enjoyed all over WV in the forests they planted and parks they helped to build. (30 min film)

1:00PM Spirit of Cacapon
Meet at the Nature Center to take a short walk and discover how the CCC boys…the Civilian Conservation Corps left its mark on Cacapon.

THURSDAY, October 12, 2023
10:00AM Spiderverse
Learn the importance of spiders and how we are all connected in the web of life. Followed by a fun game.

1:30PM Cacapon Critter Catch
What will we find? We will look for small vertebrates & invertebrates using nets, containers and our critter catchers. Then we will safely look at them through magnifying glasses & microscopes then return them where we found them. Always leave no trace!

Come and visit the Tom Ambrose Nature Center at Cacapon Resort State Park! The nature center is a great stop for all ages, showcasing exhibits on the park history and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp Morgan 1934-41. Other West Virginia natural exhibits include an extensive taxidermy collection of wildlife- fish, birds, fox, bobcat, mountain lion, deer, elk, and eastern grey wolf! Also, hands-on sand displays for wildlife tracks and a new geology interactive map to design your own mountains, rivers and lakes. Take a park naturalist guided hike or join the daily activities!
