Holly River Programs and Activities

August 5 - August 7

Naturalist Jane invites youth, family, and friends to participate in planned activities and programs at Holly River State Park. Participation is free and open to the public.

Thursday, August 5, 2021

2:00 p.m.
TURTLE TREK
Meet the naturalist in Windy Gap Schoolyard to learn the perils of our Eastern Box Turtle in a self-guided game. (YPP)

4:00 p.m.
NATURE HIKE
Accompany the naturalist up Tramontane Trail to the newly chinked and improved Patrol cabin, and down Oak Ridge Trail, ending at baseball diamond past Campground 4. Bring water & snack. Hiking stick or trek poles helpful, 3 hrs. approx. Meet on office porch.

VERY FISHY
Learn the parts of a fish, fold an origami fish to take home, then feed young trout in our trout rearing pond. This is one of our most fun activities – learning and doing. (YPP). Old Pavilion

2:00 p.m.
BATS – WHY WE LOVE THEM
Learn about our only flying mammals and the “white nose syndrome” that is killing up to 90% of hibernating species in some caves. (YPP) Balli Shelter.

4:00 p.m.
FRISBEE FRIDAY & LADDER GOLF
Join Naturalist Jane for some fun and games in field across from office. Learn a new game or come to play along.

8:30 p.m.
NIGHT HIKE
Learn about the rods & cones in our eyes and why nocturnal animals have better night vision than humans. Laurel Fork Trail. Meet naturalist at Carpenter Pavilion (YPP)

DRAGONFLIES
Meet the fighter jets of the insect world. Learn about their amazing visual and flight abilities; make a beautiful one to take home. (YPP) Windy Gap Schoolyard/Balli Shelter if rainy.

2:00 p.m.
BUTTERFLIES & MOTHS
Learn the subtle differences between these two flying insects, their life cycles & longevity. Color one to take home if you wish. (YPP) Windy Gap schoolyard/Balli Shelter if rainy.

4:00 p.m.
The INCREDIBLE JOURNEY
Become a water droplet as you move through all the places water can be on planet EARTH – a very active game. Learn while having fun in Windy Gap Schoolyard. (YPP)

All naturalist programs are free of charge. YPP (Young People for Parks) encourages youth of ages 6 – 16 to go outdoors and explore nature in our state parks. Completion of three indicated YPP naturalist programs in one week at Holly River State Park earns a certificate and/or a patch.

Jane Birdsong is a Master Naturalist and is the summer naturalist at Holly River State Park.
