2:00 p.m. ANIMAL TRACKS
Meet naturalist in Windy Gap Schoolyard where we’ll learn to identify the tracks of our most common mammals. (YPP)
4:00 p.m. BUTTERFLIES & MOTHS
Learn their similarities & differences, their life cycles, and choose one to color and take home. (YPP) Old Pavilion

10:00 a.m. HIKE SALT LICK TRAIL
Take a hike with naturalist Jane to see what’s blooming in July. Meet on office porch by 10:00 a.m. Wear sturdy shoes. This is a 1-hour hike. (YPP)
2:00 p.m. CREEK CRITTERS
Wear water shoes or old tennis shoes. We’ll be looking for larvae of insects under rocks and examining them under magnifying lenses, talking about their life cycles and learning which ones indicate clean water. (YPP) Find naturalist in Windy Gap Schoolyard, down by the creek.
4:00 p.m. SNAKES
Learn to identify the only 2 venomous snakes in WV with authentic replicas of the Copperhead and Eastern Rattlesnake and learn how helpful all our reptiles can be (YPP) Windy Gap Schoolyard

10:00 a.m. VERY FISHY
Learn the parts of a fish, fold an origami fish to take home, then feed baby trout in our trout rearing pond (YPP) Office porch picnic tables
2:00 p.m. NATURE CRAFT – ORB WEAVING
Learn to weave a web like orb weaving spiders. Meet naturalist in yard behind restaurant.
9:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. MOTH NIGHT @ CABINS AREA
Naturalist will hang a white sheet illuminated by black light. Come & see what flying night creatures are attracted to the sheet. Take photos if you wish.

10:00 a.m. TREE ID WALK
Meet naturalist by the office porch picnic tables; take a stroll around the building to learn a few of our many Holly River trees by their leaf shapes and barks. Take home a rubbing of your favorites to help remember your tree friends. (YPP)
All naturalist programs are free of charge. YPP (Young People for Parks) encourages youth of ages 6 – 16 to go outdoors and explore nature in our state parks. Completion of three indicated YPP naturalist programs in one week at Holly River State Park earns a certificate and/or a patch.
Jane Birdsong is a Master Naturalist and is the summer naturalist at Holly River State Park.
