2:00 p.m. – BLACK BEARS
Learn new discoveries about the intelligence & language of our largest West Virginia mammal through stories and an active game. (YPP) Old Pavilion

4:00 p.m. – CREEK CRITTERS
Learn the life cycles of many insects, then search for their larvae under rocks in Laurel Fork. Examine these critters under magnification and learn which ones indicate clean, unpolluted streams. (YPP) Wear shoes that can get wet! Look for the naturalist in Windy Gap Schoolyard down by the creek.

10:00 a.m.- FIREFLIES
Learn about the 2 magic chemicals, luciferin & luciferase, that make fireflies glow, their evolutionary history, and take part in a firefly census. Color one to take home if you wish. (YPP) Old Pavilion / Windy Gap

9:00 a.m. – HIKE TRAMONTANE
Meet naturalist Jane on office porch before 9 to sign up for this 3-hour hike to an old Swiss homestead, where we will have lunch and explore. Bring your own lunch & water. Hiking stick or trek poles helpful. (YPP)

2:00 p.m.- TURTLE TREK
Meet naturalist in Windy Gap Schoolyard to learn the perils of our Eastern Box Turtle in a self-guided game. (YPP)

4:00 p.m.- NATURE CRAFT: PINECONE BIRDFEEDERS
Meet in Windy Gap Schoolyard to make a birdfeeder to take home and hang from a tree in your yard.

All naturalist programs are free of charge. YPP (Young People for Parks) encourages youth of ages 6 – 16 to go outdoors and explore nature in our state parks. Completion of three indicated YPP naturalist programs in one week at Holly River State Park earns a certificate and/or a patch.

Jane Birdsong is a Master Naturalist and is the summer naturalist at Holly River State Park.
