Outdoor activities at Holly River encourage exploration of nature and traditional activities. Join Naturalist Jane Birdsong as we adapt to distancing and still have a great time participating. Youth, adults and families welcomed.

3:00 p.m. – VERY FISHY
Learn the parts of a fish, fold an origami fish to take home, then feed baby trout in our trout rearing pond. (YPP) Meet Naturalist in Old Pavilion.

4:00 p.m. – BLACK BEARS
Learn new discoveries about our largest WV mammal through stories & an active game in the Old Pavilion. (YPP)

10:00 a.m. – TREE ID WALK
A short walk around the office area to learn some of our Holly River trees by leaf shape. We have some unusual ones! Meet on office porch picnic table & look for Naturalist Jane. (YPP)

11:00 a.m. – BUTTERFLIES & MOTHS
Learn the subtle differences between these two flying insects and color one or two to take home. (YPP) Meet in Windy Gap Schoolyard, (Old Pavilion if raining).

Meet Naturalist Jane on office porch for a one-hour hike to see what’s blooming. (YPP)

8:00 pm. – CAMPFIRE SONGS – Meet Naturalist at Carpenter Pavilion, proceed across bridge to fire semi-circle on Laurel Fork Trail. Bring your favorite songs, and we’ll sing around the fire to the fireflies!

Meet in Balli Shelter to learn about luciferin’, how to tell males from females, and how to take part in the online firefly census. (YPP)

2:00 p.m. – CREEK CRITTERS
Learn the life cycle of several insects as we search for macroinvertebrates under rocks in Laurel Fork, examine them with magnifying lenses, & discover what they can tell us about our stream. Windy Gap Schoolyard: wear water shoes, bring curiosity! (YPP)
