Outdoor activities at Holly River encourage exploration of nature and traditional activities. Join Naturalist Jane Birdsong as we adapt to distancing and still have a great time participating. Youth, adults and families welcomed.

10:00 a.m. – TREE ID WALK
Meet Naturalist on office porch, take a stroll around the building to learn a few of our many Holly River trees by leaf shape & bark. Take home a rubbing of your favorites. (YPP)

1:00 p.m. – SNAKES!
Learn to identify the only 2 venomous snakes in WV with authentic replicas of the Copperhead & the Eastern Rattlesnake, and how helpful all our reptiles can be. (YPP) Windy Gap Schoolyard, Balli Shelter if rainy.

2:00 p.m. – BUTTERFLIES & MOTHS
Learn the subtle differences between these two flying insects; color one to take home. (YPP) Windy Gap or Balli Shelter

4:00 p.m. – BADMINTON
Find the net in center of Laurel Fork Trail island. Naturalist will be there with rackets & birdies to teach the game, or just hit birdies over & back for fun.

10:00 a.m. – POTATO KNOB TRAIL HIKE
Hike from Upper Falls parking lot. Meet Naturalist Jane at the parking lot 4 miles up Pickens Grade Road at 10:00 a.m., or carpool with Naturalist from office at 9:30 a.m. Hike to overlook & Lower Falls. Bring water & snack, cameras; hiking stick or trek poles helpful.

3:00 p.m. – BLACK BEARS
Learn new discoveries about our largest WV mammal through stories and an active game. Windy Gap schoolyard

4:00 p.m. – FIREFLIES – WHAT MAKES THEM GLOW?
Meet in Balli Shelter to learn about luciferin’ & luciferase, their evolutionary history, and how to take part in a firefly census.

8:00 p.m. – CAMPFIRE SING-ALONG
If not raining, Naturalist Jane will bring her instruments to Laurel Fork campfire circle, do requests, sing-alongs, WV songs, and old mountain ballads. Park at Carpenter Pavilion and cross bridge to Laurel Fork Trail.

10:00 a.m. NATURE CRAFT – DRAGONFLIES
Make a dragonfly to take home as you learn their many attributes & evolutionary history. (YPP) Meet in Windy Gap Schoolyard, Balli Shelter if rainy.

1:00 p.m. – BADMINTON
Find the net in center of Laurel Fork Trail island. Naturalist will be there with rackets & birdies to teach the game, or just hit birdies over & back for fun.

3:00 p.m. – TURTLE TREK
Meet Naturalist Jane in Windy Gap schoolyard to learn the perils of our Eastern Box Turtle in a self-guided game. (YPP)

Monday, September 7, 2020

11:00 a.m. – BADMINTON
Find the net in center of Laurel Fork Trail island. Naturalist will be there with rackets & birdies to teach the game, or just hit birdies over & back for fun.

2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. – FRISBEE GAMES
Come to the playing field across from office. There will be several Frisbee games to play. Play one/play ‘em all! Organize a team if you want. It’s all for fun and fun for all!

All Naturalist programs are free! YPP (YOUNG PEOPLE for PARKS) encourages Youth of ages 6 – 16 to explore nature in our WV state parks. Completion of 3 naturalist programs will earn a certificate and pin. Ask Naturalist Jane about the YPP program for young people ages 6-16.
