Holly River Outdoors

Outdoor activities at Holly River encourage exploration of nature and traditional activities. Join Naturalist Jane Birdsong as we adapt to distancing and still have a great time participating. Youth, adults and families welcomed.

Thursday, August 27, 2020
2:00 p.m. – BLACK BEARS
Learn about our largest mammal in the WV forest, by playing a game to understand how they survive. Windy Gap yard (YPP)

4:00 p.m. – BADMINTON
Play with 2 or 4, safely distanced. Come over to Laurel Fork Trail and look for the net near the center picnic shelter. We’ll hit some birdies over & back.

Friday, August 28, 2020
9:00 a.m. – HIKE TRAMONTANE TRAIL with Naturalist Jane (3 hrs. approx.)
Time to explore an old Swiss homestead. Bring water and snack. Hiking stick or trek poles helpful. Meet on office porch by 9 sharp.

1:00 p.m. – FIREFLIES – WHAT MAKES THEM GLOW?
Meet in Balli shelter to learn about luciferin’ & luciferase, their evolutionary history, and how to take part in a firefly census. (YPP)

3:00 p.m. – NATURE CRAFT: PINECONE BIRD FEEDERS
Meet in Balli Shelter. Naturalist will bring all supplies and a bag to carry feeders home.

5:00 p.m. – BADMINTON
Come to Laurel Fork Trail and look for Naturalist Jane who will be thrilled to hit birdies over the net with you.

8:00 p.m. – CAMPFIRE SONGS
If it is not raining, Naturalist Jane will bring her instruments to Laurel Fork campfire circle, do requests, sing-alongs, WV songs, and old mountain ballads. Park at Carpenter Pavilion and cross the bridge to Laurel Fork Trail.

Saturday, August 29, 2020
10:00 a.m. – HIKE HIGH ROCK TRAIL (1.5 miles, under 2 hrs)
Meet on office porch at 9:45 or at trail head bridge below cabin 9, at 10:00 a.m. This is an invigorating walk to a special rock overlook. Bring water, hiking stick or trek poles helpful.

1:00 p.m. – VERY FISHY
Learn the parts of a fish, fold an origami fish to take home, then feed our baby trout in the pond. (YPP) Windy Gap Schoolyard

3:00 p.m. – DRAGONFLIES
Meet the fighter jets of the insect world – learn about their amazing visual & flight abilities; make a beautiful one to take home. (YPP) Meet naturalist in Windy Gap schoolyard, Balli Shelter if rainy.

All Naturalist programs are free! YPP (YOUNG PEOPLE for PARKS) encourages Youth of ages 6 – 16 to explore nature in our WV state parks. Completion of 3 naturalist programs will earn a certificate and pin. Ask Naturalist Jane about the YPP program for young people ages 6-16.
