Outdoor activities at Holly River encourage exploration of nature and traditional activities. Join Naturalist Jane Birdsong as we adapt to distancing and still have a great time participating. Youth, adults and families welcomed.
THURSDAY, August 6, 2020
2:00 p.m. – TREE ID WALK
Meet Naturalist Jane by office porch picnic table to learn some of our Holly River trees by their leaf shapes as we take a short walk around the office area. Take home a rubbing of your favorites. (YPP)
4:00 p.m. – TURTLE TREK
Meet in Windy Gap Schoolyard to learn the perils of our Eastern Box Turtle in a self-guided game. Survival is tricky, but you might live to 100 if you’re a lucky turtle. (YPP)
FRIDAY, August 7, 2020
9:00 a.m. – HIKE TRAMONTANE > RIDGE ROAD > TENSKWATAWA FALLS and Return on Wilderness Trail with Naturalist Jane. This combination of trails is designed to amaze with high ridges & back country old growth forests. (5 Hrs. approx.) Bring water & Lunch. Hiking stick or trek poles helpful. (YPP)
4:00 p.m. – ANIMAL TRACKS
Meet naturalist in Windy Gap Schoolyard (Balli shelter if rainy) where we’ll learn to identify the tracks of our most common mammals & birds. (YPP)
5:00 p.m. – NATURE CRAFT: PINECONE BIRD FEEDERS
Meet on office porch picnic tables. Naturalist will have all the ingredients & a bag to take home.
SATURDAY, August 8, 2020
10:00 a.m. – BLACK BEARS
Learn new discoveries about our largest WV mammal through stories & an active game in Windy Gap Schoolyard. (YPP)
1:00 p.m. – BUTTERFLIES & MOTHS
Learn the subtle differences between these two flying insects. Color one to take home. (YPP) Windy Gap yard
3:00 p.m. – DRAGONFLIES
Meet the fighter jets of the insect world – learn about their amazing visual abilities and make a beautiful one to take home. (YPP) Meet naturalist in Windy Gap Schoolyard, Balli Shelter if rainy.
All naturalist programs are FREE to everyone! YPP (Young People for Parks) encourages youth of ages 6 – 16 (or the young at heart!) to go outdoors and explore nature in our state parks. Completion of 3 naturalist programs in a week will earn a certificate. Ask Naturalist Jane about the YPP program.
