Holly River Outdoors

Outdoor activities at Holly River encourage exploration of nature and traditional activities. Join Naturalist Jane Birdsong as we adapt to distancing and still have a great time participating. Youth, adults and families welcomed.

THURSDAY, JULY 30, 2020

2:00 p.m. VERY FISHY
Learn the parts of a fish, fold an origami fish to take home, then feed baby trout in our trout rearing pond (YPP). Meet Naturalist Jane in the Old Pavilion.

4:00 p.m. TURTLE TREK
Meet Naturalist Jane in Windy Gap Schoolyard to learn the perils of our Eastern Box Turtle in a self-guided game. (YPP)

FRIDAY, JULY 31, 2020
9:00 a.m. HIKE TRAMONTANE TRAIL
Up to patrol cabin (soon to be renovated) and come down on OAK RIDGE trail, ending by baseball field. Naturalist’s car will be parked there for transport back to your vehicles. Please wear masks when in the vehicle. 3 hrs approx., bring water/snack; hiking stick or trek poles useful. Meet on office porch by 9, or Laurel Fork trail head by 9:15.

2:00 p.m. BUTTERFLIES & MOTHS
Learn the subtle differences between these two flying insects; color one or two to take home. (YPP) Windy Gap yard

4:00 p.m. DRAGONFLIES
Meet the fighter jets on the insect world – learn about their amazing visual abilities; make a 4-winged one to take home. (YPP) Meet Naturalist in Windy Gap Schoolyard, or at the Balli Shelter if raining.

8:00 p.m. CAMPFIRE SONGS
Meet at Carpenter Pavilion, proceed across bridge to fire semi-circle on Laurel Fork Trail. Bring your favorite songs & we’ll sing around the fire to the fireflies!

SATURDAY, AUGUST 1, 2020

10:00 a.m. TREE ID WALK
Learn some of our Holly River trees by their leaf shape & bark as we take a short walk around the office area. Meet on office porch picnic tables; take home a rubbing of your favorites. (YPP)

1:00 p.m. SNAKES!
Learn which two are venomous and how to tell the difference. Meet in Windy Gap Schoolyard to see authentic replicas of the Northern Copperhead & Eastern Timber Rattlesnake. Learn how helpful reptiles can be. (YPP)

3:00 p.m. NATURE CRAFT: PINECONE BIRD FEEDERS
Meet in Balli Shelter to make some unique bird feeders from peanut butter, pine cones & bird seed. Naturalist will give you a bag to take home and twine to hang it with.

Ask Naturalist Jane about the YPP program for young people ages 6-16.
