Outdoor activities at Holly River encourage exploration of nature and traditional activities. Join Naturalist Jane Birdsong as we adapt to distancing and still have a great time participating. Youth, adults and families welcomed.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 22, 2020

4:00 p.m. – BLACK BEARS
Learn new discoveries about our largest WV mammal through stories & an active game in the Old Pavilion. (YPP)

9:00 p.m. – MOTH NIGHT – CAMPGROUND #2
Naturalist Jane will hang a white sheet illuminated with a black light to attract some interesting creatures of the night. Bring camera phones. (YPP)

THURSDAY, JULY 23, 2020

10:00 a.m. – VERY FISHY
Learn the parts of a fish, fold an origami fish to take home, then feed baby trout in our trout rearing pond. (YPP) Meet Naturalist in Old Pavilion.

Meet the fighter jets of the insect world – learn about their amazing abilities and make a beautiful one to take home. (YPP) Meet Naturalist in Windy Gap Schoolyard, Balli Shelter if rainy.

1:00 p.m. – BUTTERFLIES & MOTHS
Learn the subtle differences between these two flying insects; color one or two to take home. (YPP) Windy Gap

3:00 p.m. – INCREDIBLE JOURNEY
Become a water droplet as you move through all the places water can be on planet EARTH. Windy Gap yard (YPP)

4:00 p.m. – TURTLE TREK
Meet Naturalist Jane in Windy Gap Schoolyard to learn the perils of our Eastern Box Turtle in a self-guided game. (YPP)

SATURDAY, JULY 25, 2020

9:00 a.m. – NATURE CRAFT: PINE CONE BIRD FEEDERS
Meet at office porch picnic tables, Balli Shelter if rainy.

11:00 a.m. – CREEK CRITTERS
Learn the life cycle of several aquatic insects as we search under rocks in Laurel Fork & examine our finds with magnification. Windy Gap Schoolyard. Wear water shoes, bring curiosity!

2:00 p.m. – HIKE REVERIE TRAIL
Hike the Nature Trail to Tecumseh Falls & back with park naturalist Jane. Trek poles or hiking stick helpful. Bring water. Meet on office porch 1:45 p.m. or at Trailhead for Reverie, across from campground entrance at 2:00 p.m.

Ask the Naturalist about the YPP program for young people ages 6-16.
