Learn their similarities & differences and choose one to color & take home (YPP) Old Pavilion
4:00 p.m. – VERY FISHY
Learn the parts of a fish, fold an origami fish to take home, then feed our baby trout in the trout rearing pond. (YPP) Old Pavilion

10:00 a.m. – TURTLE TREK
Meet Naturalist Jane in Windy Gap Schoolyard to learn the perils of our Eastern Box Turtle in a self-guided game. (YPP)
2:00 p.m. – FIREFLIES – WHAT MAKES THEM GLOW
Meet in Balli Shelter to learn about luciferin & luciferase, their evolutionary history, and how to take part in a firefly census. (YPP)

10:00 a.m. – HIKE WILDERNESS TRAIL (4 – 4.5 hours)
Bring your lunch & water. We’ll eat around ½ way in a remote area of park, sure to see wildlife. Meet on office porch before 10. Hiking stick or trek poles useful.
10:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. – NATIVE AMERICAN EXHIBIT IN ANDERSON CENTER
Pat Jordan, a lifelong collector of Native artifacts from Webster Co. Invites the public to view his collection today in Anderson Center.
7:00 p.m. – WANDERING MINSTREL
Naturalist Jane will roam through campground 3, stopping at campfires to sing requests and WV songs.

11:00 a.m. – SOFTBALL GAME FOR ALL AGES
A great way to celebrate America is to join in a game of fun for the whole family. Bats, balls & mitts provided, or bring your own. Ballfield past Campground 4.
11:00 a.m., Noon, & 1:00 p.m. WAGON RIDES
Sign up on office porch for a ride around the park pulled by a tractor, an old tradition here at Holly River State Park.
3:00 p.m. – GREAT MIGRATION CHALLENGE
Experience the hazards birds must face as we play an interactive game in Windy Gap Schoolyard. Each “Bird” rolls the dice to “fly” to the next rest stop. Will you make it to your summer home? (YPP)
All naturalist programs are free of charge. YPP (Young People for Parks) encourages youth of ages 6 – 16 to go outdoors and explore nature in our state parks. Completion of three indicated YPP naturalist programs in one week at Holly River State Park earns a certificate and/or a patch.
Jane Birdsong is a Master Naturalist and is the summer naturalist at Holly River State Park.
